The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist, Building & Lab Safety reports to the Executive Director of Campus Safety. The EHS Specialist performs highly responsible inspection and compliance work for all buildings on the Lamar State College Orange, Lamar State College Port Arthur, and the Lamar Institute of Technology campuses. Duties and responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

Responsibilities

1. Conduct inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with institutional policy and risk-based guidelines, current federal, state, and local regulations. Generate reports concerning the outcome of these inspections. Where safety-relate deficiencies are found, communicate effective strategies to mitigate risks to the department or lab manager. Follow up visits will be done to determine the extent to remedial measures taken.

2. Perform monthly inspections of fire extinguishers, AEDs, first aid kits, and other building safety assets.

3. Provide safety related services to laboratories. Serve as liaison for the laboratory to communicate with other groups within EHS. Assist the laboratory staff in developing risk-based health and safety plans.

4. Assist in maintaining an ongoing site visit database.

5. Assist in maintaining an ongoing agent registry for tracking use of hazardous materials and coordinate the disposal of hazardous materials.

6. Assist in procurement, interpretation, and distribution of safety information, including safety data sheets for chemical and infectious agents.

7. Assist in updating and maintaining campus safety manuals, including laboratory safety manuals.

8. Respond to EHS emergencies, conduct investigations, and complete report with mitigation and training recommendations.

9. Respond to occupation injuries, conduct investigation and complete report with mitigation and training recommendations.
10. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Requires a two-year degree in safety related field, or minimum of 30 college credit hours plus safety related work experience.

Requires at least five years of safety work experience. Higher Education safety experience preferred.

Must have a valid Texas driver’s license.
This position is security-sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code 51.215.

Salary $45,000
