General Summary
- Helps to ensure the health and safety of students, visitors, contractors and employees of Western Michigan University at multiple campus locations. Conducts training, inspections, and provides input into institutional policy that apply to the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) field. Functions as the subject matter expert for the Workers Compensation internal process and assists employees who have filed a Workers Compensation claim.
Major Duties
- Administers Workers Compensation benefit program and conducts investigations.
- Generates Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) log and summary, and submits them to the Department of Labor.
- Reviews incident log for trends, and recommends program to reduce exposure.
- Executes OSHA and Life Safety inspections for 158 buildings.
- Plans, develops, and executes training for various OSHA topics, such as forklift licenses and bloodborne pathogens.
- Provides information and guidance to graduate students who study Behavior Based Safety.
- Maintains various EHS policies.
- Acts as EHS representative when director is not available. May provide direction to student workers.
- Leads projects to improve efficiency and collaboration.
- Plans and executes fire and tornado drills as required by the State of Michigan.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three years’ relevant experience.

Physical requirements and working conditions
- Light work with some physical demands such as continuously lifting or moving materials less than 25 pounds, but rarely moving more than 25 to 50 pounds.
- Work is performed with exposure to any number of elements which may occasionally require some precautions such as safety glasses, protective clothing, ear protection, etc.
