Incumbent works under the direction of the Garage Supervisor or designee, performing mechanical repairs and maintenance on automobiles, light trucks and equipment.

• Repair, maintain and rebuild assigned vehicles/equipment (e.g. automobiles, light trucks, light equipment) based on problem diagnosis or preventive maintenance schedule.
• Establish and maintain effective work relationships with clients, supervisors, County employees, elected officials, attorneys, law enforcement, other agencies, and the general public.
• Comply with Civil Service policies and regulations, collective bargaining agreements, County policies, department policies and laws to create a cooperative, safe, respectful and quality work environment.
• Inspect and repair vehicles requiring Preventive Maintenance Program.
• Complete general service work (e.g. differentials, suspensions, fuel systems, cooling and ignition systems, electrical work, tires, brakes, gas engines, air conditioning).
• Troubleshoot and diagnose automotive systems, mechanical and electrical problems, utilizing testing equipment and completing appropriate maintenance, repair or replacement work.
• Perform road tests detecting equipment defects and ensuring quality work completion.
• Review work orders and refer to applicable repair manuals.
• Complete and verify work orders and return to designated authority.
• Update written forms, reports, and maintenance records.
• Respond to emergency road service requests (e.g. repair, towing), completing required inspections and repairs.
• Perform welding (e.g. arc, acetylene, wire-feed) maintaining work area, tools, equipment and vehicles.
• Maintain job knowledge (e.g. occupational hazards, safety precautions, equipment) and skill set.
• Safely operate a motor vehicle when required to travel on County business.
• Report to work with regular, consistent attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned and directed.

• High school diploma or equivalent required.*
• Two (2) years of automotive or light truck maintenance and repair experience required.*
• Valid driver's license and own transportation upon hire and maintained throughout employment required.
• Completion of a pre-employment criminal record check and conditional offer drug screen required.
• Equivalent combination of work experience and education may be substituted for requirements on a year-for-year basis.

• Work is generally performed in a maintenance garage, but includes frequent work outdoors in all seasons. Noise level is usually loud. Work involves potential exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, noxious gases/offensive odors, dust and mechanical hazards.

Work also requires the ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and/or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
• Required sensory abilities include vision, hearing and touch. Visual abilities, correctable to normal ranges, include close, distance and color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear within normal ranges. Incumbent must possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate computers and other equipment.
