The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a hardworking and motivated individual to fill the role of an Equipment Technician 3 in Spokane, WA. In this position you will provide the necessary journey-level repair and maintenance skills to keep the WSDOT equipment fleet in a safe and serviceable condition, by performing journey-level inspection, troubleshoot, diagnoses, service, and repairs on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance or heavy and/or industrial/commercial equipment, or motorized farm equipment. What to Expect
This position works a 4/10 schedule, with opportunity for overtime. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on all WSDOT equipment, both in the shop and in the field.- Inspect, diagnose, and repair all vehicle systems such as electrical systems, brake systems, steering and suspension systems, hydraulic systems, cooling systems.
- Complete seasonal mounting, repairs and metal fabrication to sanders, snowplows, self-propelled brooms, weed sprayers, tractor mounted mowers and other specialized seasonal equipment.
- Prepare newly delivered equipment for service.
- Generate and update M-5 work orders. Input PM inspection data.
- Operate a computer to maintain shop records, complete online training, attend virtual meetings, and research repair information online.
- Repair and maintain fuel dispensing sites.
- Operate shop equipment such as hoists, jacks, grinders, drill presses, welders, cutting torches, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
Qualifications
This is an Equipment Technician 3 (ET3) position. However, the hiring manager reserves the right to fill the position at a lower level (ET2 depending on qualifications), providing an opportunity for an individual to gain the required experience on the job as part of a formal “in-training” plan.
To be considered for the Equipment Technician 2 level ($51,888-$60,156), the following are required:
- Two (2) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic.
To be considered for the Equipment Technician 3 level ($57,324-$66,420), the following are required:
- Three (3) years of experience in the performance of preventative maintenance and repairs assisting a journey level mechanic to include two (2) years as an Equipment Technician 2 or equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment, OR journey-level standing as a heavy equipment and/or industrial/commercial mechanic as demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship; OR by journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.
The following are required at both the ET2 and ET3 levels:
- High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with N and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restrictions and DOT Medial Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
- Ability to operate shop equipment such as: welders, drill press, grinder, press, hoist, air tools, power tools, forklifts, computerized diagnostic equipment, had tools, and jacks for the purpose of repairing equipment, or fabricating one-of-a-kind specialty parts and accessories.
- Ability to follow directions and advice from others or supervisor.
- Ability to wear PPE appropriate to position.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Graduate from a technical school or apprentice program specializing in automotive or heavy equipment repair.
- ASE certifications in automotive or truck repair, fabrication, and welding experience and/or training certificate, hydraulic system experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and other computer skills.
Important Notes
- This position has been approved for in-training. The hiring manager is looking to hire at the Equipment Technician 3 level, however the in-training plan will allow candidates to be considered as an Equipment Technician 2, if not qualified at the highest level.
- Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 357-16-197 mandates that all employees who work for executive cabinet agencies (which includes the Department of Transportation) must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Compliance with this mandate is a condition of employment with WSDOT. Exemption may be granted for religious or medical purposes; however, accommodations will be subject to approval based on the essential functions required of the position.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
