Estimator Position Summary:
Estimate new projects by gathering proposals, blueprints, specifications and related documents. Identify labor, material and time requirements by studying all documents gathered. Computer costs through analysis and prepare bid documents. The secondary function is to manage the daily details of projects that are either assigned or that are acquired within the designated management zone.
Essential Functions:
- Search out all avenues to bid on work. Avenues include but are not limited to works in progress, dodge report, visiting GCs, phone contacts, and online resources.
- Attend pre-bid meetings to gather details of the project.
- Study and understand the contract documents, specifications sections, drawings, addendums, and all updates through the bidding process.
- When possible, investigate jobsite conditions prior to bid date to understand and evaluate the site accessibility and other such items that might affect schedule/cost.
- Perform value engineering and negotiate bids.
- Manage multiple bids on an ongoing basis.
- Follow up on all bids maintaining contact with GCs.
- Maintain estimate and bid documents within SWP’s system.
- Review estimates with Management with detailed analysis, checking calculations and making corrections as necessary.
- Review awarded contracts for accuracy and review your bid with the Project Manager who will manage the job.
- Stay up to date in industry developments and communicate with the team.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- Ability to read blueprints.
- Experience in the commercial construction industry with a strong knowledge of construction materials, processes and equipment.
- Knowledge of OSHA and other safety regulations.
- OSHA 10- or 30-hour certification.
- Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.
- Experience with estimating software, such as STACK or PlanSwift
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction, or similar field, or 3+ years of industry experience.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Ability to work on a team as well as independently within scope of established guidelines and practices.
- Demonstrates effective communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting for extended periods of time. In addition to driving, you will be expected to sit at your desk, in meetings, or other situations.
- Standing for extended periods of time. You will be expected to navigate through job sites and likely have standing conversations with GCs. You may be expected to stand while reviewing blueprints, drawings, and other documents.
- Alternate sitting or standing at will. You will be expected to transition throughout the day from sitting to standing and vice versa as necessary.
- Near visual acuity. Project documents and computer use require the ability to see small details in clarity.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting 30 pounds or less.
- Infrequent lifting over 30 pounds.
- Communication. You will be required to communicate with management, co-workers, and GCs at minimum. Communication may be verbal, written, or other agreed upon method.
