Job description

We are looking for a Mechanical Estimator to prepare contract proposal estimates for mechanical work, including the determination of applicable project plans and specifications.

Responsibilities


  • Review proposal specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate.
  • Develop a complete job general conditions estimate
  • Prepare mechanical estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work. Prepare preliminary schedules and competitive bids
  • Maintain files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc.
  • May review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials.
  • Lean Construction Initiatives (elimination of waste, 5S, logistics)
  • Interpret bid documents (drawings, technical specifications, front end documents, etc. to determine scope of work and contents of estimate
  • Write Requests for Information
  • Prepare budgets, bulletin estimates and process bulletins
  • Prepare an estimate review which includes overhead and profit
  • Plan and develop a project schedule from bid document information and effectively communicate it
  • Develop and implement a successful Design/Build bidding strategy
  • Understand design risks associated with Design Build for both designer and major subcontractors
  • Prepare estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work
  • Develop a Bid Package procurement strategy for a project
  • Manage/coordinate design to a budget
  • Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering quality, and/or availability of materials
  • Develop and implement a successful CM proposal Strategy
  • Knowledge of contract structure and law that is sufficient to properly evaluate subcontractor’s requests for revisions to “standard” language
  • Understanding of Insurance and bonding issues as it relates to both standard (GC & CM) and special (Design-Build, full service, etc.) contracts
  • Negotiate extra work quotations with Customers
  • Perform additional assignments per supervisor’s direction.

Qualifications


  • 4 year engineering degree or equivalent combinations technical training and/or experience.
  • 5+ years estimating and/or engineering experience
  • Mechanical design build experience
  • Advanced knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, heavy process piping and estimating techniques and cost control, plus ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems essential. Read specifications and drawings.
  • Process piping experience should include high pressure heavy wall piping systems, code piping and refinery piping.
  • Knowledge of Water & wastewater treatment work is a plus.
  • Communication, presentation, and teaching skills (written / oral)
  • Knowledge of the Construction Specifications Institute’s (CSI) divisions, Federal, State and Local Health and Safety regulations and how they affect the cost of a project
  • Be able to cultivate strong relationships with the local and regional mechanical subcontractor market
