DESCRIPTION
Role: Executive Director — Data and Information Risk
Location: New York, New York
Background on the Position
This role will reside within the Firm’s Operational Risk Department focusing on Data and Information Risks.
Operational Risk refers to the risk of financial or other loss, or potential damage to a firm's reputation, resulting from inadequate or failed internal processes, people, systems, or from external events (e.g., fraud, legal and compliance risks or damage to physical assets). Management works with the business units and control groups to help ensure Morgan Stanley has a transparent, consistent, and comprehensive program for managing operational risk, both within each area and across the firm globally. This group designs, implements and monitors the company-wide operational risk program.
Data and Information Risks refers to a number of risks associated with the firm's acquisition, usage, and management of data and information, including Data Quality, Information Security, Data Privacy, and Information Management. The selected candidate will particularly focus on supporting foundational activities that cut across data and information risks as well as Data Quality.
On the Data Quality side, the selected candidate will support the firm's implementation of its data quality policy from the second-line risk perspective. This involves participating in cross-organizational forums and working with key stakeholders across the firm to implement the objectives of the firm's data quality policy in an effective and efficient manner.
On the foundational activities, a particular focus will be on helping to transition the firm to a data-centric architecture that makes sure there's a consistent understanding of what data and information assets the firm has and where they are located. There will also be an emphasis on common and foundational controls that cut across programs.
Primary Responsibilities
> Represent Operational Risk in data and information risk forums (including Data Privacy, Information Management, and Data Quality), as well as in cross-risk forums.
> Help to promote Operational Risk interests and support Operational Risk leadership in firmwide Data Quality governance forums.
> Provide Operational Risk leadership on cross-organizational Data Quality implementation working groups.
> Advise divisional stakeholders on the implementation of data quality controls.
> Devise methods to measure data quality and report on those measurements across the firm.
> Provide subject matter expertise and recommendations for transitioning to a more data-centric environment.
> Provide subject matter expertise on foundational topics such as data and information inventories and metadata tags.
> Help to maintain data and information policy documents and envision future enhancements.
> Devise methods to apply the Operational Risk framework to data and information related risks.
> Train other team members as well as ORD coverage officers on data and information risks.
> Build and maintain strong positive relationships with key stakeholders including divisional data officers and the data center of excellence.
