The Visual Art curriculum extends beyond skills, techniques and concepts. The faculty provide environments that promote purposeful exploration towards the creation of visual expressions. Our intent is to have students develop the habits of mind and practice that allow them to become curious, confident, and resilient individuals devoted to enriching the world and the lives of people around them.

Punahou School is actively recruiting a part time Visual Arts position in the Academy (9-12). Applicants should have good communication skills, an interest in being part of a program that values hands-on material experiences, and a willingness to collaborate and contribute to a vibrant well established high school curriculum. Applicants should be flexible and be able to teach a variety of level one courses in both two and three dimensional disciplines such as; drawing, painting, sculpture, handbuilding and small metals/jewelry. Applicants should have a good command of the fundamentals as well as a broad knowledge of processes and techniques in both two and three dimensional disciplines.

Applicants will be required to teach a one year long cross disciplinary product design course co-taught with a social studies faculty member. In this course applicants will need to teach a variety of rapid prototyping processes as well as the OnShape CAD platform and Adobe Illustrator. Instructors will need to be able to work with a variety of rapid prototyping tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, and CNC woodworking machines. Instructors will need to also be able to teach basic skills and safety in woodworking using power and basic hand tools.


Scheduling Details:

  • Work Year: 9 Months
  • School Year: 2023-2024
  • Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Schedule may vary based on operational needs


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or Arts Education in academic area for which applying.
  • Three (3) years of experience with hands-on studio art instruction.
  • Understanding of multiple types of art media and processes which might include: observational drawing, constructive drawing, painting, additive and reductive processes in sculpture, basic ceramics handbuilding skills, basic small metals/jewelry skills, digital art, and digital publication.
  • Applicants should present evidence of teaching potential and expert knowledge of the following:
  • The elements and principles of design
  • Historical and contemporary methodology, process, and practice relating to two and three dimensional disciplines.
  • Upkeep and maintenance of two and three dimensional studio spaces.
  • Applicants are required to present a current portfolio of work.
  • Experience using CAD and 3D modeling software
  • Experience using rapid prototyping machines including laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC routers.
  • Experience with basic shop and tools and power tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in Fine Arts or Arts Education
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching in an academic setting.
  • Sensitivity to design aesthetics and critical thinking as well as the ability to articulate issues of form, content, material, and process.
  • Creative and artistic excellence through an active exhibition record.
  • Professional practice including participation in professional organizations, and other creative business practices.
  • Evidence of effective teaching experience in foundational courses, drawing, painting, sculpture, 2D and 3D design.
  • Experience working with digital media.
