We are seeking a Family Coach to join our Salem - Self-Sufficiency Program (SSP) team.

What you need to qualify
  • Bachelor's degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science, or a closely related field; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and one year of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing); OR
  • Associate's degree in a Behavioral Science, Social Science or a closely related field AND two years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing); OR
  • Three years of human services related experience (i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, prevention, health, cultural competencies, inadequate housing).
Essential attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
  • Ability to organize work efficiently and manage multiple tasks with interruptions, as well as manage workload with competing deadlines.
  • Experience with direct client service and engagement in dynamic environments. Experience working with diverse populations and understanding cultural sensitivities.
  • Experience working in the human/social service field and have knowledge about ODHS programs.
  • Ability to facilitate and support families with case management tools and resources.
  • Experience explaining complex rules, regulations, processes, and procedures both verbally and in written communications. Experience communicating and resolving conflicts or disputes without further escalating or retraumatizing clients.
  • Knowledge of community resources serving the needs of diverse populations, as well as knowledge of mental health and substance abuse resources and ability to complete referrals in person and by phone. Ability to coordinate, communicate and initiate action among multiple parties and integrate multiple services as part of a case plan.
  • Experience with case management and assessing customers’ strengths and services needed, establish boundaries, and set realistic milestones. Ability to initiate and maintain relationships. Experience working with individuals that find it challenging to express themselves verbally.

Your duties at a glance
The Self Sufficiency Offices help with food benefits (SNAP), cash for families (TANF), childcare assistance (ERDC), medical, refugee services, and domestic violence services. The goal of the Self-Sufficiency Program is to help families address barriers and gain skills and access to employment opportunities to become self-sufficient. TANF is a collection of programs directed at improving the lives of very low-income Oregon families with children.
As a Family Coach, you will:
  • Conduct interviews to determine family need and eligibility.
  • Explore alternate resources and links clients to community services.
  • Completes program applications for program benefits and, if eligible, issues appropriate support payments. Engages clients in family evaluation of strengths.
  • Jointly develops a case plan and identifies the steps the family will take towards self-sufficiency and meeting their basic needs.
  • Monitors progress, needs, and makes necessary modifications to the case plan.
  • Initiates and participates in case staffing, employment readiness, life skills training, and supports job search as needed.
Working conditions
  • Position is fast paced at times.
  • High volume of individual and family contact.
  • You will be exposed to a diverse range of customers and will need to respond with compassion and professionalism through a trauma informed lens.
  • You will have contact with a range of people including some who may be experiencing emotional and financial stress.
  • Employee's work is conducted in offices, participant's homes, and other community sites.
  • Hours of work may vary from day to day and may include evenings and weekends.
  • Overtime must be pre-approved.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. If no driver's license, must be able to provide alternate method of transportation.
  • Some overnight travel may be required to attend statewide meetings and training.
  • A job offer is contingent upon passing test(s) evaluating your proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • All work will be conducted in-office.
  • Work Schedule:
    • 8:00 am – 5:00 pm; Monday-Friday.
