JOB SUMMARY
This is work of a training nature performing entry-level tasks in order to develop skills and acquire knowledge in the areas of accounting, auditing and/or financial analysis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Depending on the area of assignment, participates as a trainee in performing the following duties:
Posts encumbrances, expenditures, revenues and disbursements to general and subsidiary ledgers; makes adjusting entries; reconciles and balances accounts; prepares periodic and special financial statements.
Participates in audits of District financial operations; confirms expenditures; reconciles cash accounts; checks vouchers against expenditure records for conformance with standard accounting procedures and propriety of transactions.
Reviews budget requests for conformance with approved programs and previous operating experience; recommends changes as required for conformance to these factors; reviews requests for budget revisions; determines possible effects of such revisions; recommends appropriate action.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Performs related work as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
Knowledge of personal computers and spreadsheet applications.
Ability to maintain and audit general and subsidiary ledgers and journals.
Ability to prepare and analyze financial statements and reports.
Ability to learn, within a reasonable period of time, the accounting and budget procedures of the School District of Philadelphia.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.)
Auditing and Financial Analysis Specialties:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university in accounting, business administration, finance, public administration, government administration or a related field.
Accounting Specialty:
Completion of a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited college or university prior to the date of appointment. Degree must be in accounting/finance or business administration with a minimum of 24 credits in accounting.
