Job Summary
The Fire & Life Safety Technician applies knowledge, skills, and abilities related to the function of fire protection systems and equipment. Fire protection systems include but are not limited to fire sprinkler, standpipe systems, fire pumps, kitchen hood systems, special hazard systems, fire extinguishers, and fire alarm systems. The Fire & Life Safety Technician will work closely with other members of the Fire & Life Safety team during annual certifications, annual inspections, fire drills, fire safety audits, fire safety trainings, administrative work, and other duties as assigned. Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work in a diverse environment are essential.

The Fire & Life Safety Technician must be able to develop and maintain strong collaborative and professional relationships with faculty, staff, students, and University support personnel while actively promoting an enhanced culture of safety.
Minimum Education and Experience
High school diploma; three to five years related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered; computer skills for reports and presentations.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associates degree in fire protection technology, fire science, or similar area of study
  • Possess NICET Fire Alarm Systems and/or Water-Based Systems Level 1 or higher
  • Certified in Simplex fire alarm systems
  • Incident Management Training: ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700, ICS-800
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • This position will be responsible to perform and/or coordinate all campus Fire & Life Safety system inspections, testing, maintenance, and repairs in accordance with NFPA guidelines as adopted into code by the State of Texas and University of Texas System.
  • Monthly inspections and maintenance of fire extinguishers. Replace and/or install missing or discharged fire extinguishers and/or equipment.
  • Complete documentation in accordance with NFPA and current local fire code requirements.
  • Promote and exemplify campus, divisional, and departmental high standards for excellent client service, effective use of resources, workplace safety, professional development, personal accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Assist in oversight and management of inventory and maintenance of life safety equipment including but not limited to fire extinguishers and fire alarm equipment. Ability to maintain records thereof.
  • Assist with outreach and educational programs for students, faculty, and staff that promote awareness and best practices for fire safety and prevention.
  • Assist in oversight and management of the University’s program of fire evacuation drills.
  • Be available in the event of a campus disaster or campus hazardous material release incident to serve, based on expertise, in the appropriate emergency response role, and where applicable, in an appropriate designated departmental role.
  • Work with the appropriate vendors in the regular inspection of university safety equipment including fire extinguishers, fire alarm system, and fire sprinkler systems.
  • Tracks fire system impairments. Accounts for the operational status of all fire systems.
  • Enters fire system testing documentation into the fire system database.
  • Maintains stock levels and storage of new and used fire system equipment
  • Works with IT department to update and maintain fire safety information on the campus map
  • Other duties as assigned
