Job description
Responsible for training firefighters, as well as other city employees, regarding current best practices in fire service.
Essential Job Functions
- Review, develop, and update approved lesson plans.
- Assist other instructors with the building and development of approved lesson plans.
Conduct and document remedial training with firefighters as needed.
Monitor and evaluate instructors to ensure competence in teaching ability and content of training.
Serve as primary point of contact for fire academy.
Coordinate portions of the Field Training Officer (FTO) program. Review recruit progress reports and keep the chain of command apprised of progress.
Provide instruction for in-service training programs.
Ancillary Job Functions
- Assist in the scheduling of the academy and in implementing in-service training coursework which meets state requirements.
- Assist with general maintenance of the training center.
Assist with research and development of fire equipment.
Perform related duties as assigned
Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
- Associate Degree in Fire Science or related field, or equivalent training as a certified Instructor. Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, CPR certification, and EMT license.
Must possess and maintain Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations certification.
Must obtain or possess and maintain Missouri Division of Fire Safety Fire Service Instructor I and II, Live Fire Trainer certification, and Incident Safety Officer certifications within one year of hire.

- Knowledge of fire suppression and first responder methods, practices, and techniques.
- Knowledge of fire and emergency response fleet, equipment operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of emergency and non-emergency safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use and operation of fire equipment and fire suppression and first responder activities.
Strong understanding of the principles of classroom instruction, professional development training, and curriculum design.
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills required to successfully develop and conduct training.
Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and basic office equipment/machines.
Ability to operate projectors, smart boards, and other related audio/visual equipment.
Proficient in computer skills, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations.
Demonstrated proficiency in collaborating with others and teamwork.
Must be able to research training topics and legal opinions to determine best practices.
Must be able to adapt to challenging situations and find creative solutions.
Demonstrated sound judgment, stress tolerance, decisiveness, leadership, interpersonal insight, and persuasiveness.
Ability to use and wear all required personal protective gear and equipment.
Clear verbal communication skills and ability to give and follow written and oral instructions.
Strong interpersonal skills in order to interact with other City employees, public safety agencies, and the general public.
Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
- Varying, inclement outdoor weather conditions and in extreme heat and cold non-weather conditions.
- Exposure to mechanical and other hazardous fluids, fumes, and airborne particles.
Work in high, dangerous places and near mechanical moving parts.
Exposure to loud or very loud noise.
Work in hazardous traffic conditions.
Required to wear a respirator and/or self-contained breathing apparatus.

Frequently required to drive, grasp, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl during emergency situations.
Repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement while operating fire equipment or office machines.
Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
