Department or School Site The Food Production Assistant works at the Newman Nutrition Center in
Los Angeles. The scheduled work hours for this position are
Monday-Friday, 5:00am - 1:30pm or 1:30pm - 10:00pm.
Benefits Insurance: Paid premiums for your choice of several medical, dental,
vision, and life insurance plans. Retirement: Membership in the California
Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS).
Vacation: Two weeks of paid vacation to start. Three weeks after five
years of year-round paid service. Paid Holidays: 12 days.
NOTE: Positions in this job classification may be offered on a 10 or 11
month basis - salary and paid time off for 10 or 11 month positions will be
adjusted accordingly. Positions in this job classification may be subject to
additional furlough days
Job Duties/Responsibilities The Food Production Assistant performs a variety of routine tasks related
to the receiving, cooking, plating, packaging, shipping, and sanitation
efforts in a high volume food processing plant. Duties involve extended
periods of heavy lifting or other strenuous physical activity. Typical duties
include but are not limited to:
- Assisting in unloading food supplies and moving the supplies to
appropriate holding locations, such as refrigerators, freezers, or other
storage areas.
- Unpacking by hand or by machine various foods from cans, cartons, or
other containers.
- Participating in the plating, packaging, and assembly of food items by
loading, adjusting, and operating production line machines and by hand
placing or packing food items as necessary to complete the assembly
process.
- Preparing completed food products for shipment by placing products on
trays, baskets, pallets, or carts, counting and moving them into site
refrigeration/freezer or delivery trucks.

Minimum Requirements MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational
proficiency.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience in the manufacturing, packaging or processing of foods in
large quantities and in the care of related equipment is preferable.
SPECIAL:
A valid Los Angeles Unified School District Food Handlers Health
Certificate must be obtained at time of appointment.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Auditory acuity as required to hear oral communications while noisy
machinery is in operation.
- Visual acuity as required to measure, weigh, and package foods and
ingredients.
- Good depth and space perception as required to operate a supply
transporter.
- Manual dexterity as required to operate or to work in close proximity to
food production machinery.
- Stand and walk on concrete and tile floors for long periods of time.
- Work in refrigerated areas.
- Safely lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
Desirable Qualifications The ideal candidate for Food Production Assistant will have prior
experience in the manufacturing, packaging, or processing of foods in
large quantities and in the care of related equipment. The ideal candidate
adheres to safety instructions and policies and is cautious while working
with manufacturing equipment. The ideal candidate has strong attention
to detail and is able to work in a team to yield positive outcomes in the
workplace and provide excellent service to students, staff, and visitors.
They are also willing and able to report for work as early as 4 am, or as
late as 4 pm.
Employment Selection Process The TENTATIVE exam plan consists of a computerized multiple choice
test and a scored questionnaire. The scored questionnaire is part of your
application and will be evaluated after the computerized multiple choice
test. You must receive passing scores on both the computerized multiple
choice test and the scored questionnaire in order to be successful in this
assessment. In a typical scored questionnaire, the training and
experience shown on your application materials is evaluated in relation
to the background, experience, and competencies identified for
successful performance in this job. For this reason, it is recommended

background and specialized skills, knowledge, and abilities. Please
