Inspects construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadways, bridges, traffic signals, airports and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications; acts as consultant regarding work progress and problem resolution; may serve as the only inspector on a construction project or assist in overseeing construction inspection activities for very large and/or complex projects within a district or conduct statewide construction inspection activities for ongoing airport improvement projects. Responsible to a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for approval of all work. Work requires contact with contractors. May perform materials tests and manufacturing process inspections at fabrication sites. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
- You will actively participate in pre-construction meetings, and be an integral part of the
question and answer process during these meetings. - You will coordinate with internal Area Office leadership and industry partner personnel
regarding project progression and issues as they arise. - You will perform and document material testing to make sure the materials meet the
required standards. - As a member of our Construction Inspection team, your main duty will be to inspect
construction work (mainly roadway and bridge projects) to ensure it is being done
according to the plans and specifications that pertain to that project. - You will inspect the project barricades to ensure they are in compliance with the project
standards and requirements. You will make sure the barricades are placed according to
the applicable project traffic control standards and plans. - You will help with, and oversee, the record keeping activities relating to any job you may
be assigned to. This will include recommending payments to contractors, recommending
change orders/extra work/supplemental agreements, and reviewing submittals from
contractors and/or consultants. - You will participate in the review of plans as well as the collection of data needed for the
development of future construction projects. - You will resolve differences in interpretation pertaining to plans and specifications.
- You will utilize various applications to document the project’s work progress, as well as
any issues that may arise during the life of the project. - You will perform job responsibilities other than those listed here.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 4 years in construction, maintenance and repairs, construction inspection, engineering support, materials or process inspection; or related experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

- Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering

- Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
- Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures
