Overview
The Warden Detective Unit will conduct investigative work involving the enforcement
of State and Federal fish and wildlife laws and regulations and other laws within an
assigned supervisory district for the Department of Fish and Wildlife Warden Service
and act as a liaison with federal law enforcement agencies. Duties include, but are not
limited to, investigations of fish and wildlife crimes and other crimes as they pertain to
fish and wildlife investigations, interviews of potential violators, responding and
investigating serious injury/fatal hunting related shootings incidents, search and rescue
operations, and conducting background investigation for hunter education instructors,
"Let's Go Fishing" instructors and game warden trainee and deputy game warden
applicants as well as other investigations as assigned. The warden detective may periodically
supervise part-time warden investigators and other warden personnel.

Class Definition
Law enforcement and conservation work involving the enforcement of fish and wildlife laws and regulations within an assigned supervisory district for the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Duties include investigations of fish and wildlife crimes, interviews of potential violators, responding and investigating hunting related shootings incidents, search and rescue operations, investigating boat and snowmobile crashes, and conducting background investigation for Hunter Education instructors, Let’s Go Fishing instructors and Game Warden Trainee and Deputy Game Warden applicants.
Environmental Factors
Duties are performed largely in an outdoor setting and could often require traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Exposure to all Vermont climatic conditions is involved. Duties may require lifting and dragging of carcasses or other heavy objects. Duties may require evening, night, weekend, and other irregular duty hours. Exposure to danger may occur in a variety of ways due to weather, terrain, hostile suspects or hunters, and pursuit of law violators.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent AND current employed at the Senior Game Warden level or higher AND at least two (2) years of work experience completing Fish & Wildlife investigations.
Special Requirements
Incumbents must maintain a full-time law enforcement certification, be a certified Field Training Officer (FTO) OR a certified Hunter Related Shooting Investigator.
This position is Group "C" retirement with mandatory retirement at age 57.
