In collaboration with other personnel, lead a dedicated group of employees and volunteers who create and maintain this space of natural beauty that enhances the quality of life throughout the Treasure Coast and beyond.
Position Summary:
The Gardener is responsible for the routine maintenance of the Gardens, and may be helped by assistant gardeners, volunteers, and outside contractors as assigned. Responsibilities include supervising and directing assigned personnel. This position requires experience in managing staff, developing and implementing successful garden operations, clear communication skills, and decisiveness.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
The gardener must have at least 3 years of experience managing a public garden, private estate, park, or similar setting. A degree in a horticultural field is a plus. The gardener must have a valid Florida driver’s license; have or be willing to obtain a Florida Pesticide Applicator’s license; be able to perform strenuous physical work outside in the Florida weather year-round; have an understanding of integrated pest management; be able to operate small equipment; be willing to acquire and maintain a complete knowledge of Heathcote Botanical Gardens’ mission, programs and activities; have a working knowledge of identification and care of ornamental plants used in Florida, including Florida native plant species; have demonstrated use of researched based horticultural practices; have strong interpersonal, communication, organizational and time management skills; and have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The Gardener’s work schedule includes occasional weekend and evening work.
Work hours and benefits:
· Hours are flexible to cover events, community activities and more.
· Paid vacation: years 1-4 ten (10) annual vacation days; year 5 and after fifteen (15) annual vacation days.
· Eight (8) paid holidays for full time employees.
· Three (3) days paid leave for death in the immediate family.
· Years 1-4 five (5) annual sick days; year 5 and after 7 annual sick days.
