What You Will Do

Put your expertise in greenhouse gas, trace gas, and aerosol measurements and modeling to solving important climate, decarbonization and emissions verification problems. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering in climate and energy that are important for national security. You will work in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division and will be primarily engaged with the Center for Aerosol-gas Forensics (CAFÉ) in the Water, Atmosphere, and Vulnerabilities of the Earth System (WAVES) Team. Our diverse team uses state-of-the-art in situ (laser absorption) and remote (solar spectroscopy) instruments to measure atmospheric greenhouse and trace gases and aerosols in situ and remote sensing in the field. Our team will support and enrich your research and professional goals through our outstanding breadth and depth of expertise in our team's respective fields. You will be expected to participate in field campaigns, publish results in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and present your work at conferences. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a third year depending on performance and funding availability.

We seek a candidate interested in developing and applying skills related to greenhouse gas and trace gas measurements. Your research may include:

  • Methane, ethane, propane, other hydrocarbons and nitrous oxide and their isotopic composition in oil and gas regions at multiple scales with our in situ (Aeris, Picarro, Ionicon-PTR-TOF-MS, Isoprime-IRMS, Aerodyne-QCL) and remote (EM27-SUN), and Bruker 125HR) sensors

o Deploy our mobile in situ and 3-D sonic sensors and use data quantify natural gas emissions from abandoned and active oil and gas wells.

o Calibrate and use solar spectrometers to retrieve total column greenhouse and trace gas mixing ratios at kilometer scales

  • Greenhouse and pollutant gas quantification using field and signatures data

o Forward and inverse modeling of emissions at plume to regional scales

o Work with simple and complex model frameworks (gaussian/WRF) and inventories

o Develop of machine learning methods to quantify fluxes using cases for training.

  • Evaluate the chemistry by which reactive trace gases are converted to aerosols

o Field observations of reactive organic gases (with PTR-TOF-MS) and aerosol chemical composition (SP-AMS) for DOE campaigns

o Laboratory studies using a photochemical reactor and/or cloud-chamber

o Using results to inform aerosol and ozone production

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Communication skills as evidenced by publications and oral presentations at conferences.
  • An ability to work in a diverse and dynamic team environment.
  • Proven ability to work on two concurrent projects, effective time management.

Education/Experience: Candidates must have received a Ph.D. within the last five years in a STEM field or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Research experience in greenhouse gas observations, atmospheric chemistry, carbon cycle science, civil and environmental engineering, remote sensing or experimental physics.
  • Experience making field measurements of greenhouse and trace gases and/or aerosols.
  • Interpreting and using field data to evaluate emissions and/or mechanisms
  • Programing experience for merging data sets and data analysis (Igor, Python, R, etc.)
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.
