Lake View Cemetery, one of Cleveland’s civic treasures, located in the University Circle area, is seeking Seasonal Grounds Laborers to join its team. Under supervision and in keeping with the mission of Lake View Cemetery, the Grounds Laborer is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery. Providing burial services, monument and stone installation, repairing waterlines and roads; and maintenance of the landscape plan, including the planting and maintenance of turf, trees, shrubs, ivy, and flowers.
May evolve into a full-time position with benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following is an outline of the basic duties and responsibilities of the position identified above. It describes the duties and responsibilities in the broad scope and is not intended to be all-inclusive. Individual(s) in this position may from time-to-time be assigned other duties as appropriate.
- Prepare interment sites and perform interment process; including driving truck, lift and carry mud boards, lowering device and greens, casket if needed; back fill as needed.
- Follow up care and maintenance of all interments and other excavation sites; including tamping, leveling and seeding or sodding.
- Be responsible for all tools, equipment and vehicles assigned and keeping them in good working order and cleaned after use.
- Perform all horticultural work to accepted industry standards including prune and trim shrubs and trees; and plant, transplant and cultivate shrubs, trees, flowers, bulbs and ground covers
- Must exhibit skill, expertise, safety and knowledge in use of all power equipment including trucks, utility vehicles, tampers, vault handler, chainsaw and other needed equipment.
- Responsible for proper installation of memorials and monument foundations; including digging, lifting, moving & carrying stone; pouring cement.
- Responsible for all related memorial work requests and repair work including straightening, realigning and leveling existing memorials.
- Complete all client requests; including vase installation.
- Keep the cemetery in a neat and clean appearance; loading and removing debris in assigned vehicle and using the chipper if required; includes flowers, trash, branches.
- Perform road and water line repairs
- Weed and edge flower, ivy and shrub beds.
- Cutting and removal of large pieces of wood including fallen trees and branches;
- Unload delivery of materials including plants and stone.
- Tent installation
- Apply turf and plant herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers when needed.
- Perform snow removal using snow plow, snow blower and shovel.
- Observes good housekeeping and safety habits, follows Cemetery policies and procedures and performs other duties as assigned.
- Perform other tasks as needed or assigned by management
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Must possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License.
- Must be able to efficiently operate all equipment assigned for job completion in a safe and efficient manner, including back hoe, dump truck, tractor, utility vehicle, chainsaw, pump and sprayer
- Must follow work procedures and practice standards set by management
- Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact and work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
- Thorough understanding of current burial practices and the ability to make independent decisions in the best interest of the cemetery operations.
- Work in an ever-changing environment with demonstrated ability to prioritize and juggle competing tasks and demands.
WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT
- Must exhibit proper fitness and ability to perform the assigned job duties including sufficient mobility for walking, standing, bending, reaching or sitting for prolonged periods of time; and to transport materials and supplies by lifting, pulling and carrying weight up to 150 pounds
- Frequently works outside in varying weather conditions and exposure to various plants.
Involves the operation of heavy equipment, including:
- Tractors, dump trucks and utility vehicles
