About Second Harvest

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America – the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to approximately 600 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout Central Florida. Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank has distributed enough food for 81 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes. In addition, Second Harvest’s 16-week culinary training program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults. Second Harvest is distributing enough food to feed 66,000 people a day. To learn more about SHFBCF, visit www.FeedHopeNow.org.

Department Overview

Second Harvest Food Bank’s Health & Hunger Strategies Department is responsible for ensuring that the right kind of food gets into the hands of people experiencing hunger, where they are and when they need it, in a safe and equitable manner, through our network of partner feeding programs, schools, healthcare partners, and community partners in the six counties we serve: Brevard, Orange, Osceola, Volusia, Seminole, Marion, and Lake Counties. We do that by building and leveraging relationships in the community, fostering the capacity of a large diverse network of partner feeding programs, assessing community needs, utilizing data in decision-making and evaluation, working collaboratively internally and externally, maintaining a spirit of innovation, as well as engaging in advocacy. Our work with the healthcare sector is a key component of our strategy to address the root causes of hunger while improving community health at-large focusing on nutrition and health outcomes and using food as medicine. A client-centered perspective that promotes respect and dignity for people experiencing hunger, a reliance on data and measurement to evaluate our work, and coalition-building to maximize our effectiveness underpins all of our work. The Health & Hunger Strategies Department is part of an interdependent system at SHFB comprised of Operations, Finance, Marketing and Development, and our Community Kitchen programs.
