A Certified Pharmacy Technician is a healthcare professional who works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to assist with various tasks in a pharmacy setting. In addition to the duties of a regular Pharmacy Technician, Certified Pharmacy Techs have completed a formal training program and passed a certification exam to demonstrate their knowledge and competency in the field.

The duties and responsibilities of a Certified Pharmacy Technician may include:

Assisting pharmacists with filling and dispensing prescription orders, including counting and labeling medications, verifying patient information, and entering prescription data into pharmacy computer systems.

Conducting inventory checks and stocking shelves with medications and other pharmacy supplies.

Processing insurance claims and communicating with insurance companies to resolve any issues or discrepancies.

Answering customer inquiries and providing information about medications, dosage instructions, and possible side effects.

Assisting with medication compounding and preparation of specialized medications, such as chemotherapy drugs.

Performing medication therapy management services, which may include reviewing patient medications for potential drug interactions and making recommendations to improve patient outcomes.

Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of patient care and medication orders.

Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations governing pharmacy operations, including proper storage and disposal of medications.

Certified Pharmacy Technicians typically hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and have completed a formal training program that includes classroom instruction and practical experience in a pharmacy setting. They have also passed a certification exam administered by a professional organization, such as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Certified Pharmacy Techs may work in retail or hospital pharmacies, and may be required to work evening or weekend shifts to accommodate customer needs.
