Heavy Equipment Operator

NJDWSC has an immediate opening at our offices in Wanaque, NJ, for a Heavy Equipment Operator. As a member of our team, you will contribute to the continued reliable delivery of the highest-quality potable water to the over 3.5 million residents of Northern New Jersey, through the coordination and implementation of a wide range of projects.

General Purpose:

The Heavy Equipment Operator safely manages all heavy equipment including, but not limited to, tractor trailers, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, wheel loaders, track loaders, dozers, excavators, trenchers, rollers, compactors, end dumps, farm tractors, industrial mowers, boom cutters, gantry cranes, forklifts, plows, snow blowers and salt spreaders. The Operator is responsible for the safe use of all equipment as well as the inspection, cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting and minor repairs of that vehicle.

Essential Functions:

• Maintenance of all used vehicles.
• Patching pot holes.
• Checking roadways/pipeline for washouts/tree issues after storm events.
• Move equipment to/from job sites.
• Haul residuals.
• Move and stockpile fill.
• Make pickups at quarry, garden centers, etc.
• Perform towing.
• Tow, launch, dry dock boats, set buoys.
• Plowing, salting, sanding.
• Pick up and haul leaves and clipping.
• Service, install and maintenance of plows.
• Digging, road repairs, installation of pipe.
• Forklift use.
• Assists all other departments as assigned.
• Mowing of aqueduct pipeline and all Commission properties in need.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighting 50 to 150 lbs.
• Frequently bends, twists, kneels, crawls and crouches.
• Repetitive movement of hands, arms and legs.
• Restricted movement.
• Intense noise and vibration.
• Exposure to adverse weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, odors, dirt and dust, including ladder work.
• Ability to navigate uneven surfaces.
• Ability to navigate working in unusually loud conditions.
• Ability to work underground or with unusual heights.
• Ability to function in extreme temperature fluctuations.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

• High School Diploma/GED
• Class A CDL
• Must possess a valid New Jersey Drivers’ License.
• Annual DOT Physical
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
• Mechanical aptitude, excellent hand eye coordination.
• Excellent spatial awareness.
• Analytical and problem solving skills.
• Time management skills.
• Knowledge of road construction safety requirements and procedures.
• Do moderately heavy lifting and stand for prolonged periods of time, bend, reach, kneel and work in confined spaces and industrial plant environment with potential exposure to various chemicals, noise, and extremes in temperature/humidity.
• Willingness to work “outside of your craft” to support all ongoing and future projects and other crews.
