NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Salary Range

$101,400 - $201,400

  • Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a physicist to work as a theory and design expert in a multi-disciplinary team, using high-fidelity simulations and analytic models to design experiments to investigate magnetically driven inertial confinement fusion and high energy density science.

Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Design and analysis of experiments on Sandia's Z pulsed power facility.
  • Develop new design concepts to address emerging problems of interest.
  • Identify key science issues that need to be better understood and explored for ICF and HED targets and influence programmatic directions.
  • Collaborate with experimental and diagnostic physicists and engineers not only at Sandia, but the broader HED and ICF communities.
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at appropriate scientific conferences.

Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference!

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require

  • PhD in Physics or closely related engineering field
  • Two years of experience in Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) or High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) research
  • Experience in experimental research and/or analysis of experimental data
  • Experience using hydrodynamic simulations to model experiments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire

  • Ability to think innovatively and to perform complex analytical analysis and problem solving
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and reports, and in technical and project presentations
  • ICF or HED target design experience
  • The ability to be self-motivated and to work as part of a diverse team, including project members from other NNSA labs

About Our Team

The ICF Target Design Department (1684) pursues theoretical and simulation-based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion (ICF), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility (NIF). The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and hydrodynamics experiments. This work relies on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools, with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas. In carrying out this mission, department 1684 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE). This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
