Inova’s Women Research department is seeking a Full Time Histology Technician 1 to join their team.

Position Summary:

As a Histology Technician 1, you will be responsible for cutting, staining and preparing tissue samples for the Pathologist to review. To help achieve our mission, you will also be responsible for prioritizing/completing testing procedures in an accurate and timely manner while maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Your ability to follow the standard operating procedures for embedding, to ensure quality of blocks and proceeding steps in the production of slides, is of vital importance. Utilizing a microtome to section paraffin blocks and consistently produce high quality slides for routine/special staining procedures is required. Communicating to maintain team knowledge, demonstrating knowledge of regulatory standards in order to satisfy compliance requirements and participating in professional growth opportunities to enhance personal, team and department development is expected.

Job Responsibilities

• Maintains accurate documentation such as variance forms, process specimen logs, equipment maintenance logs, etc.
• Recognizes and identifies different gross tissue structures to ensure proper orientation.
• Ensures that the tissue is embedded according to standard operating procedures.
• Communicates STAT cases, discrepancies and assists with continuous workflow.
• Embeds 35 – 40 quality cassettes per hour. Cuts 20 – 25 quality slides per hour.
• Meets any continuing education requirements to maintain certification(s) or as required by department.
• Successfully completes one position specific/job related continuing education unit annually outside of mandatory HealthStream courses.
• Obtains sections for recuts, special stains and immunohistochemistry stains while selecting the appropriate controls, mounting, dry time, deparaffinization, etc.

Requirements for consideration:

Experience :

• One year of experience or successful completion of Inova Health Systems Histology program.

Education:

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.

Certification:

• HT or HTL ASCP certification after six month of completion from Inova Health System's Histology program if less than one year of work experience or N/A if one year or more years of work experience.
