Yakama Nation Tribal School values Parent, Family, and Community Involvement. The role of the Home-Parent Liaison will be to accept the responsibility of providing support to the instructional program, while being a reliable resource to inform the appropriate stakeholders about information regarding school activities, procedures, and policies; facilitating monthly meetings to solicit parent involvement; provide families information on available services; create community outreach and networks to assist as needed; and refer families to available Yakama Nation Programs, as well as other local programs. An additional expectation is the Home-Parent Liaison be aware of the COVID-19 safety protocol, preventative measures, and status of the Yakima County regarding the Phases 1-4 related to COVID-19. Employee may be tasked with hazardous duties, in which Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will need to be properly used, such as but not limited to working in close proximity of potentially COVID-19 exposed individuals.


Examples of Work Performed:

  • Serve as a liaison between teachers, parents, students, support staff and the community regarding educational programs, services and various student issues; assist in coordinating and arranging various programs and services to meet the needs of students.
  • Provide outreach, liaison and guidance services to assist in resolving student issues and problems in areas such as attendance, academics, behavior and health; work with parents, teachers and others in developing and implementing strategies, goals and objectives for resolving student issues.
  • Serve as an informational resource to parents, staff and others concerning school programs, services, attendance issues and other matters; respond to inquiries and provide information concerning related activities, standards, guidelines, practices, goals, objectives, processes, policies and procedures.
  • Meet, confer with, and interview parents in the identification of family needs and issues; provide information and materials to parents to assist in the location and utilization of school and community services and resources; refer parents to school services or community resources as appropriate.
  • Provide tutoring and academic assistance to individual and small groups of students to enhance skills and knowledge and resolve academic issues in various subject areas as assigned by the position; assist students in understanding and completing assignments, homework and projects.
  • Compose, distribute and respond to a variety of correspondence related to assigned liaison and support services; initiate and receive telephone calls; make home visits; schedule and arrange various student, parent and other appointments as assigned.
  • Contact parents to discuss student needs, issues and progress and provide assistance in meeting student goals and objectives; follow up on student issues, progress and problems with staff, teachers and others to assure needs are being met.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with community agencies to facilitate and enhance support services for YNTS students, parents and teachers.
  • Arrange, schedule and request parent participation in conferences, meetings and other activities; encourage parent participation in various school and community programs and services.
  • Review student records in the identification and monitoring of student attendance and academic issues as assigned by the position; prepare and update documentation as required.
  • Assist in coordinating and arranging various programs and services to meet the needs of students, parents and teachers.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment including a copier, fax machine, computer and assigned software; drive a Yakama Nation Tribal Vehicle to conduct work.
  • Assist with coordinating and arranging assessment tests as required; administer and score tests.
  • Contact community agencies and Yakama Nation Programs to provide information and follow up on referrals.
  • Maintain various records related to assigned activities.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings as assigned, such as JOM, Senior Parent Meeting, etc.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others.
  • Knowledge and ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of community resources; school safety and security practices.
  • Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development; and state education programs.
  • Knowledge of problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited.
  • Skill in performing multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills, in order to meet changing job conditions.
  • Ability to perform the functions of the job includes operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Ability to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
  • Ability to be flexible is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances.
  • Ability to work with data utilizing defined but different processes.
  • Ability to work with a wide diversity of individuals.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree in Education or related field.
  • Two years professional work in a comparable position or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Required to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Required to complete background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School requirements.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's license with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Must have First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Must not have a history of child abuse or neglect.
  • Must have no history of drug or alcohol abuse.


Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor' s Degree and one year of experience in comparable position or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST
: Is required for Pre-Employment with the Yakama Nation. During employment, tribal employees are also subject to random testing (YN Personnel Policy Manual, Chapter 2.9.6, Section (a), (g), Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy).


TRAINEE
: The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.


INDIAN PREFERENCE
: In efforts to practice Self-Determination, the Yakama Nation grants Indian Preference for employment, promotions, and transfers to its employees and qualified applicants as appropriate. This may limit career opportunities for non-Indian applicants and candidates.


Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.3:

  • 10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member.
  • 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 0-points= Non-Indian.

Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4:

  • Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).


VETERAN PREFERENCE
: Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.

Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.
