Essential Functions:

Performs manual and skilled horticulture work
Maintains gardens and grounds

Examples of Duties

Examples of Work:

UNDER GENERAL SUPERVISION
Assists with the design, installation, and maintenance of plant collections both indoors and outdoors
Instructs and assists labor crews with landscape installations and maintenance
Communicates with animal keepers regarding their needs for horticulture
Assists the supervisor with trouble shooting problems and with the needs for landscaping
Detects and treats plant collections for pests and diseases and then takes appropriate actions
Participates in researching and locating new plant material
Assists with educational programs and interpretive tours for Zoo visitors
Operates a variety of equipment and vehicles including mowers, tillers, weed eaters, dump trucks, and other equipment
Participates in year round grounds maintenance, walkway cleaning, snow removal, and related tasks
Performs related work

Minimum Requirements

Physical Requirement & Working Conditions:

Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds
Lifts and carries items weighing over 50 pounds in a team setting

Minimum Requirements:

Certificate from a two year vocational program
Horticulture
Related field

One year (2080 hours) of commercial landscape maintenance experience

Other Minimums:

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license

Equivalency:

Two years of college (including at least 12 semester hours) in Horticulture, Botany, Ecology, Biology or a related field and one year (2,080 hours) of commercial landscape maintenance experience

Special Requirements:

Must be licensed as a Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator, Category 3, by the State of Kentucky or obtain within 90 days of employment (KRS 217B)
