Education: Associates Degree in Health Information Management and/or Bachelors' Degree in Health Information Management, or other science-based degree such as nursing preferred.

License/Certifications: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required.

Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years' experience as an inpatient coder at an acute care or academic teaching facility required or successful completion of inpatient coding apprenticeship program.

Proficiencies: Advanced coding skills and knowledge; Understanding of revenue cycle processes, inpatient, billing requirements, EMR usage, EPIC preferred; 3M Coding and Reimbursement System; effective communication skills (verbal and written), ability to serve as a resource and mentor regarding on coding and compliance issues. Demonstrates ability to work effectively and collaboratively with Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (CDIS) and other healthcare professionals.

Specialized Knowledge: knowledge of ICD-109-CM/PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, AHA Coding Clinic and relevant CMS regulations; comprehensive knowledge of disease processes, medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical documentation theory.
Coding staff at this level are able to code both IPPS (Inpatient Prospective Payment System) and CAH (Critical Access Hospital) acute care, swing bed and psychiatric facilities; including multiple specialties (newborn, obstetrics, internal and hospital medicine, pediatrics, neurology, general surgery, oncology and psychiatry – not an exhaustive list), as well as mentor.
This position is differentiated from the Coder II level by the skill and the critical thinking required to handle complex inpatient coding scenarios. Coded data is reported to meet licensure requirements, for statistical purposes as well as reimbursement purposes.
