The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) at the University of Oregon is a nationally accredited art museum that upholds the highest professional standards in the museum field. In addition to maintaining collections of Asian, European, and American works of art, the museum routinely presents traveling and special exhibitions, partners with community organizations on educational and cultural programs, and with diverse communities to build access and inclusion. The JSMA serves as an educational resource for the university and K-12 schools throughout our state. The mission of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is to enhance the academic mission of the University of Oregon and further the appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts for the public.

Position Summary

The JSMA Building Services Assistant is an exciting opportunity for an individual semi-skilled in trades who is looking to get out of the rain and heat for the comfort of a museum. The Building Services Assistant position supports JSMA facility work in exhibition preparation and installation and facility rental and maintenance. In this position you will support the preparator team that oversees the JSMA's robust Shared Visions exhibition program, assisting weekly with gallery preparation and installation of art. The position will also assist with setup tasks for rental events and semi-skilled maintenance tasks throughout the facility. The Building Services Assistant reports directly to the JSMA Lead Preparator and the Event Manager.

Minimum Requirements

  • Two years of general carpentry experience involving both basic construction work like framing and finish work such as cabinetry.

Professional Competencies

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail-oriented, and time-sensitive environment and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to operate a personnel lift, pallet jack, and a variety of hand and power tools with precision and dexterity.
  • Ability to follow written instructions for room set-ups; move equipment, furnishings, and supplies; and perform light maintenance and custodial duties.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years’ experience in a variety of construction and industrial trades work including but not limited to construction, painting, plumbing, detailed mechanical repair, electrical, and carpentry.
  • Experience in working in a facilities maintenance capacity.
  • Experience working in institutions dedicated to objects of historical and/or cultural significance.
