Position Description

Advertised Job Summary
The Juvenile Justice Attorney will coordinate the legal aspects of a juvenile justice grant project that addresses the de-institutionalization of status offenders. This includes provision of staff support to the Status Offender Task Force, development of best legal practices for these cases, and development of training curricula. The Juvenile Justice Attorney will develop and conduct training for legal and juvenile justice professionals and prepare written resource materials related to the handling of status offense cases.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires law degree, membership in good standing in the South Carolina Bar, and at least 4 years relevant experience, including juvenile justice proceedings. Law school internships or externships may count towards the experience requirement.

Preferred Qualifications
Prefer experience in developing and conducting trainings. Prefer experience in the provision of staff support for committees or work groups. Prefer completion of the Children’s Law Concentration in conjunction with law degree.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Thorough knowledge of South Carolina statutory and case law related to juvenile justice. Thorough knowledge of family and circuit court procedures and rules in proceedings related to juveniles. Familiarity with major policy issues affecting the prosecution and treatment of juveniles. Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking. Ability to establish effective working relationships with legal partners. Self-starter and have ability to think creatively.
