Job Summary


Oversees the daily operation of the biology department prep lab and provides training and supervision of staff in the preparation of equipment, materials and facilities used for hands-on labs in a diverse range of lower division biology courses on the MCC Southern and Dobson campus. Coordinates with other lab staff such that all biology faculty are supported throughout instructional hours. Works with faculty in the development of instructional materials and shared lab schedules; tests and troubleshoots protocols as necessary. Oversees care and maintenance of greenhouse, outdoor habitat, salt water aquarium and the associated plants and animals. Manages inventory of expendable supplies (chemicals, plastic and glassware, gloves, and preserved specimens) and places necessary orders in a timely manner. Ensures that equipment and models are routinely cleaned, maintained, and serviced to optimize their operational longevity and support lab instruction when needed. Works with the risk management to update, implement and audit adherence to laboratory safety procedures (including hazardous waste disposal) such that Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards are met. Engages in professional development activities to stay current on new developments in scientific research, advance technical proficiency, and improve management skills.

Essential Functions


40% Prepares materials and equipment for laboratory classes, organizes and oversees the inventory, acquisition, preparation, cleanliness and functionality of laboratory supplies, equipment, materials and physical arrangement for a diverse range of biology classes.

25% Analyzes and interprets data and maintains files and records; contacts vendors for specific equipment/supply information; troubleshoots technical problems and arranges for professional servicing as necessary; oversees preventative maintenance to maximize longevity of models and equipment; ensures compliance with safety procedures and best practices; engages in professional development activities.

15% Oversees care of living specimens in greenhouse, reef tank and prep room and other duties as assigned.

10% Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the work of staff.

10% Coordinates with faculty to plan lab schedule for the semester; assist in the development of new lab activities, and provide training as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and four full-time equivalent years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.

OR

High School Diploma/GED and six full-time equivalent years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.

Desired Qualifications


A. Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Biology or related STEM field

B. Four or more years of experience as a lab technician and/or lab supervisor.

C. Experience and expertise with of wide range of biology techniques, lab equipment and technology

D. Experience in supervising, and/or training staff members.

E. Experience with development and implementation of laboratory safety practices, including chemical labeling, hazardous waste disposal procedures and routine compliance audits of mandated documentation and facilities. OSHA training and certification preferred.

F. Experience with budget management and inventory management such as monitoring of expendable lab supplies, purchasing, receiving, and recommending large capital items.

G. Effective written communication skills

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects including the human body.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids); and moderate exposure to intense noise.
