Job Description:
- This job requires an apprentice graduate or associate’s degree in a relevant discipline, plus 1 year related experience.
- An incumbent operates under supervisor/professional review and within standard operating procedures, utilizing a variety of specialized techniques, prescribed methods and specialized standards.
- Test and analysis techniques, methodologies and results are reviewed by an incumbent's supervisor to ensure the adequacy and accuracy of data derived.
- Frequent communication is made with section/department personnel. Occasional communication for clarification or suggestions concerning test parameters, material selection, design, etc., with professional and supervisory level personnel within the requesting department is required.
- Depending on the area assigned, an incumbent may perform any of the following or comparable duties: -Collects samples and performs laboratory tests and/or analyses (e.g., chemical and instrumental analyses, physical and analytical tests, quantitative and qualitative analyses) to determine the chemical or physical characteristics or composition of materials for purposes of quality control, material identification, product development, etc.
- Assists engineering personnel in the development, testing and implementation of technical procedures, processes and equipment.
- From general guidelines and instructions provided by engineering personnel, performs requested tests/analyses, fabricates mock-ups, etc., to test hypotheses, qualify/refine procedures, and/or evaluate equipment and processes for production application.
- Records tests results and may write test reports describing procedures used and conclusions.
- Prepares related charts and graphs, as required. Provides feedback on observations, and may make recommendations for resolution of problems based on practical knowledge.
- Tests, repairs, calibrates and maintains equipment and various apparatus for conformance to established standards.
- Installs and sets-up related technical equipment. May demonstrate and explain correct operation of equipment, modify/develop instruments or devices, or participate in planning and testing modified equipment and instrumentation procedures.
- May provide technical assistance to production personnel during the implementation of new processes, procedures, etc.
- Provides classroom and hands-on instruction under the direction of professional staff, to train and qualify personnel in special procedures and/or inspection techniques.
- May maintain records related to the particular training/qualification program, and initiate training/requalification of personnel as necessary. -
- Prepares/revises technical and administrative procedures and instructions governing specialized operations, such as inspection or analysis techniques and documentation requirements, under the guidance of professionals.
- May participate in departmental audits to ensure compliance with established procedures.
- Prepares laboratory samples for testing and analysis. Based on user requests, machines test specimens to specifications and inscribes identification numbers on specimens for purpose of tracking material and monitoring test status.
Qualification Guidelines:
- This job requires a technical knowledge of specialized techniques, methodologies and standards associated with the work assigned, generally acquired through post-high school studies in the related sciences or industrial arts, and/or two or more years related Trades or Inspection experience.
- For technicians working in a Mechanical Laboratory, an Associate degree in the relevant field (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Nondestructive Testing, etc.) or an Apprentice graduate is highly desirable. For technicians working in the Chemistry laboratory, a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or an Associate degree or Apprentice graduate along with 2 or more years of experience in a Chemical laboratory testing environment is required.
3rd Shift Schedule - 12:00am - 8:00am
Special Requirements
- Comfortable navigating a navy vessel either with an escort or without an escort.
- Comfortable working around exempt quantiles of a radioactive source governed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of Virginia. The individual will not be handling the source but may notice an enclosure with the source inside.
