Principal Responsibility

St. Anthony’s Medical Clinic provides primary and specialty care to individuals and families the Tenderloin neighborhood. Our range of primary, preventative and ancillary care support all patients in building healthy lifestyles for themselves and their families. As part of a multidisciplinary team including physicians, NPs, RNs, medical assistants, front office staff, care/case managers, medical records, and community health workers, you will work to provide comprehensive care to our patients. The Lead Medical Assistant (LMA) assists with quality patient care and flow during clinic hours. In the spirit of our Franciscan values and heritage, our team provides compassion and care daily. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Staff Performance and Development

  • Functions as a resource for Medical Assistants (MA) in their primary duties and responsibilities.
  • Facilitate training new and existing medical assistants and volunteer staff on health education, laboratory, and pharmacy services along with the nurse manager.
  • Review charts, lab test results, and encounter forms for completeness and to assess follow-up as needed.
  • Work with Nurse Manager to oversee pharmacy logs, lab supplies logs, and storage to maintain quality assurance.
  • Provide first level counseling to staff and keep manager apprised of early personnel issues.

Guest Engagement

  • Assist with intake, financial screening, and set-up for patient visits.
  • Assist with the activities such as coordinating immunizations for adults and pediatrics. Follow-up on missed appointments, reminder calls, lost-to-care calls, and high-risk referrals. Track abnormal PAPS and ensure proper patient f/u and referrals.
  • Adhere to SAF client confidentiality and HIPAA guidelines. Adheres to Child Abuse and Domestic Violence reporting guidelines.
  • Treat all guests with empathy, dignity, and respect. Seek to understand the other person's perspective and experience.
  • De-escalate stressful situations and participate in conflict and crisis resolution.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work effectively across cultures and an openness to learning about cultures not familiar to oneself.

Program Administration and Operations

  • Assist as needed, including medication refill requests, specialty and procedure referrals, and pre and post-clinic chart review.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse Manager to direct and guide back-office staff in monitoring and expediting workflow.
  • Handles medical supply inventory, orders, and cost control.
  • Prepares, cleans, and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment, disposing of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Assist with clinic scheduling problem-solving, patient wait times and other areas of concern to increase efficiency and quality of services.
  • Works collaboratively with clinic staff on programs to improve patient outcomes. Assists in organizing and participating in quality improvement activities using the PDSA model to improve systems/services.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse Manager to complete routine quality control tests for lab test equipment (glucometers, urinalysis machines, hemoglobin testing machines, HGBA1C testing machines,) in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations and facility policy.
  • Assists with daily and monthly quality assurance reviews, including emergency kit check-off.

  • Participates in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients in conjunction with the RNs.
  • Complete reports and all other paperwork neatly, legibly, and thoroughly.
  • Enter data and information electronically as required. Looks up data and reports electronically through a database as requested.
  • Understand and follow the organization's programs, policies, and procedures
  • Participate in regular training and development opportunities to increase personal capacity to apply innovative approaches to daily workflows, service delivery, and guest care and engagement.

Teamwork

  • Provide sick/vacation leave backup for medical assistants and other clinic support staff when no other resources are available.
  • Participate in the clinic’s quality improvement meetings.
  • Participate in relevant meetings supporting team communication and the program's capacity to fulfill organizational goals and mission.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS desired or equivalent work experience.
  • Completion of medical assistant training program required. Phlebotomy certification is a plus.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish required.
  • Ability to perform phlebotomy and basic laboratory duties desired.
  • Must provide proof of current driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an outpatient medical clinic or hospital, or medical office setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening, oral, and written communication skills are required.
  • Ability to be polite, diplomatic, and firm. Can set limits and practice professional boundaries with guests, volunteers, donors, and coworkers.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and high-pressure situations in a self-composed and self-assured manner.
  • Computer and word processing skills required. Ability or willingness to learn to use information and communication technologies (computers, smartphones, and iPads) to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
  • Ability to work with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse patient population.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and handle multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to be punctual, reliable, cooperative, and stay team-oriented.
