Job Description Summary

The Lead Systems Engineer, MR Safety, works closely with cross functional teams to define and establish system requirements for safety compliance, and owns and develops product risk management strategy, plan, and traceability, to comply with safety limits and standards. This role requires a good understanding of the principles of MR Safety, patient/customer needs, regulatory standards, product technology and intellectual property of GE Healthcare as well as our competitors. Impacts departmental operations and responsible for planning/execution. The role has some autonomy but is focused on execution of activities within an operating discipline covered by standard functional practices and procedures. Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for cross-functional (software/hardware/coils/applications) investigation of system design issues. Lead and drive innovative solutions for complex system safety issues.
  • Provide domain expertise to own/lead technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations to achieve best optimization in system performance within safety limits and regulatory standards.
  • Develop product risk management strategy, risk management plan and traceability for Cause Mitigation Table (CMT), Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Develop and update Product RAC/CMT for hazards, causes, mitigations and ALARPs, as needed.
  • Work closely with design engineering team, regulatory team, complaint handling team, lead system designers, medical director, service team and field personnel to define system requirements for safety compliance, which can flow down to subsystem engineering teams.
  • Perform safety modeling and simulations to define safety limits in product design and architecture.
  • Work across functions and team boundaries to help define, design, and implement safety engineering tasks for the next generation of MR products.
  • Review and approve system and subsystem design concepts for safety compliance; apply guidelines in hardware and mechanical development using Electromagnetic field, Electromagnetic compatibility, Digital and RF design theory.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree with 3 years relevant work experience (or Ph.D. Degree) in Engineering or Life Sciences: Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong understanding of MR physics and imaging/signal processing fundamentals.
  • Proficient in the use of software tools for analysis, simulation and modeling.
  • Proven ability to develop timely and effective solutions for challenging design problems.
  • Effective communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to pursue tasks to completion.

Desired Characteristics

  • Ph.D. degree in Engineering or Science: Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Medical Physics, or closely related field.
  • 5 years of experience in engineering product development in the Healthcare field.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading projects with global teams.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SAR and PNS certification testing for MR scanners.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Acoustic and Thermal certification testing for MR scanners.
  • Applied knowledge of Design for IEC 60601-1-2 standards.
  • Knowledge and understanding of GEHC design controls procedures.
