LIBRARIAN

General Statement of Duties

Performs responsible general library services to assist and instructs patrons in using library services, equipment, and Town library facilities.

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class performs professional duties for adult or children’s services of the Farmville Public Library. Work includes providing customer service to library patrons by conducting research of reference materials, library information systems, and catalogs. Duties include providing information pertaining to library resources and equipment; and providing one-on-one instruction to customers. Plans and presents a variety of programs for patrons of target ages. Performs outreach programming for senior centers, day cares, and facilitates homebound delivery for a variety of settings. Reports to the Library Director and performance is evaluated on the basis of attainment of individual and departmental performance objectives, feedback from the public served, periodic conferences, and personal observation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

Provides general library services at adult circulation/reference desk; registers patrons; checks materials in and out.

Assists library patrons with the use of library computers and related technology and equipment; troubleshoots minor computer and related peripheral issues.

Develops and implements story times, programs, workshops, classes, tours, and other community outreach to meet the reading and educational interests of the community and further the mission of the library. Programs and events take place in the library and out in the community.

Serves as a professional library resource by recommending children’s library materials in all formats to library patrons and community groups; provides leadership and trains staff in children’s library materials recommendations, trends in reading and publishing, and community reading and learning interests.

Provides information assistance such as locating information via online or print, as well as reader’s advisory service.

Obtains books and materials from and sends books and materials to other libraries via interlibrary loan; provides packaging and shipping duties.

Plans and implements children’s and young adult Summer Reading Programs.

Develops and organizes the children’s and young adult collection; reviews publisher’s catalogs and attends online webinars; orders books and materials to meet patron needs and improve collection.

Assists in providing interlibrary loan services to adult patrons.

Assists in planning and conducting adult programs.

Processes financial transactions according to Library policy.

Develops and presents programs for adults, occasionally for youth; publicizes those programs.

Assists with collection development.

Recommends materials for purchase and assists with deselection process.

Attends professional workshops, continuing education courses, and regional and network seminars and meetings.

Represent the library to community groups as assigned.

Evaluates and prioritize the needs of the library’s adult services on a regular basis and reports to the Library Director.

Documents statistics related to customer service and library duties with accuracy.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of library collections, especially children’s and young adult.

Thorough knowledge of operation of a public library and practices of library science including administration, reference, bibliography, and trends.

Thorough knowledge of the policies, procedures, and practices of the library.

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of providing library services in the circulation of books, reference services, and cataloging.

Considerable knowledge of library terminology and related professional languages used within the Department.

Considerable knowledge of technology processes, including Microsoft Office, efficient internet searching, and the ability to navigate library databases and electronic resources.

Skill in internal and external customer service excellence, teamwork, and collaborative conflict resolution skills.

Ability to effectively plan, organize and deliver interesting and informative programs targeted to specific audiences.

Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form and deal tactfully and courteously with the public.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employee and patrons using courtesy, patience, tact, and good judgement.

Ability to think creatively and be willing to experiment in developing creative library programs and services that engage the community.

Ability to commit to the principles and ‘best practices’ in librarianship and customer service.

Ability to convey enthusiasm about learning, information, library resources, and the library's role in the community.

Ability to adapt to changing needs; recognize and set priorities; be flexible in options, and open to creative solutions.

Ability to be accurate, thorough, and timely in the completion of assignments.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to perform sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Must be able to perform basic operational skills of stooping, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and repetitive motions.

Must be able to perform vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.

Must possess the visual acuity to compile and compute data and statistics, operate a computer terminal, perform extensive reading, determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observe general surroundings and activities.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation with a Master of Library Science from an American Library Association accredited institution and ability to meet the qualifications for Public Library Certification established by the State Library of North Carolina including least two (2) years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience providing the necessary competencies.

Special Requirements

Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.

North Carolina Public Library Certification.
