The
Licensed Practical Nurse, Operating Room, will work
Full Time, Days. As measured by direct or indirect supervisory observation and/or co-worker feedback, the successful incumbent demonstrates skills in the following duties and responsibilities. Examples of these include, but are not limited to the following:
- The Licensed Practical Nurse, prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
- Assists in positioning, prepping and draping of patients for surgical procedures.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately, as needed.
- Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
- Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
- The Licensed Practical Nursesets up, scrubs and prepares for procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating RN or Nurse Manager.
- Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set up.
- Anticipates needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after last case; restocks supplies, when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case clean up.
- Is fully responsible for care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including assistance in cleaning and processing of instruments.
- Follows written procedures for steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring, as needed.
- Consults with other staff members, when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.
- Regularly collaborates with other members of the nursing team, in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
- Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with coworkers for the patients benefit.
- Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the Operating Room/ Endoscopy Technicians scope of practice.
- Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure relative endoscopy equipment.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance, as necessary.
- Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
- Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
- Protects patients sensitivities and right to privacy.
- Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
- Demonstrates ability, under direct supervision of an RN/Provider, to collect information on all patients as per policy.
- Ability to adequately collect information on pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patients age.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse demonstrates knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and patients clinical condition.
- Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Demonstrates ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patients response to treatment and evaluate overall plan daily for effectiveness under supervision of an RN.
- Able to recognize the need to have an RN/Provider assessment of the patient.
- Ability to interpret results of waived tests; take appropriate action on waived tests results.
- The Licensed Practical Nurse demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an RN.
- Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
- Interacts professionally with patient/family and involves patient/family in the formation of the plan of care/discharge instructions.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patient population served.
- Able to interpret data about the patients status in order to identify each patients age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse/Provider.
- Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patients needs.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and physicians.

Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent, required.
Experience:
- Previous perioperative experience, preferred.
Licensure/Certificates:
- Licensed Practical Nurse Certification, required.
- BLS required within thirty days of hire.
Skills:
- Excellent motor, hand, eye, coordination and manual dexterity, required.
- Ability to handle and operate equipment, read, retains and comprehends written and oral medical and technical information.
- Ability to build rapport quickly, develop trust, sustain working relationships, and represent LFH positively in internal and external meetings, required.
- Basic computer skills required.
- Strong time-management and organizational skills, required.
- Effective communication skills and interpersonal skills, required.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires extensive standing, with some pulling, pushing, and routine walking.
- Ability to lift, possibly heavy lifting in support of patient positioning, and instrument and equipment handling.
