O.E. DuRant, Inc., a subsidiary of Moran Towing Corporation, has an opportunity available in the position of Line Boat Captain. This position, as a supervisor, is a direct representative of O.E. DuRant, Inc. and must act in accordance with the Captain's Overriding Authority Statement.

DuRant, Inc., located in Wilmington, North Carolina, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Moran Towing Corporation, and, working with Moran Environmental Recovery, provides ship chandlery and line boat services to customers. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited, to:

Safety Management Responsibilities:

• Review and be fully conversant with the Safety Management System (SMS), including onboard contingency plans and vessel procedures.
• Implement the Mission Statement / Safety and Environmental Policy of the Company.
• Motivate and ensure that crew members adhere to the Company’s Safety and Environmental Policy.
• Verify safety and pollution prevention activities.
• Issue appropriate orders in a clear and simple manner.

Responsibilities for Vessel Operations:

• Become familiar with the current operational status upon joining a boat by discussion with the off-going Captain, and comply with relevant rules, regulations, codes and guidelines.
• Proper turnover of command.
• The safety of all personnel on the vessel and reporting unsafe situations or opportunities for improvement.
• Employ due diligence to have the vessel in a seaworthy condition prior to commencing a voyage.
• Establish crew work rules and assign crew duties, watch periods, and maintenance schedules. Ensure that performance standards, emergency procedures, safety meetings and drills are implemented as required by Company policy.
• Require that his/her lawful orders are carried out by all persons onboard.
• Issue and enforce standing orders as necessary for the safety of the vessel movement or voyage. Ensure that such orders are recorded in the logbook if deemed necessary.
• Give full consideration and providing knowledgeable, thoughtful responses to suggestions of the crew regarding safety and the crew’s or third party’s engineering guidance on engineering matters.
• Prohibit all contraband on board the vessel at any time, which includes alcoholic beverages, illegal drugs, and firearms.

Responsibility to the Company:

• Promptly report deficiencies and other matters affecting safe operations or pollution risk which require the assistance of shore-based personnel.
• Promote a positive Company reputation and positive customer relations by ensuring that the vessel is operated in a safe, efficient manner consistent with the Mission Statement / Safety and Environmental Policy. This includes promoting crew productivity and ensuring that standards are upheld with respect to vessel appearance, maintenance, general housekeeping and operational readiness.
• Report to the Company any information of interest which may result in safer or more uniform, efficient, and productive business practices.

Personnel Responsibilities:

• Recommend personnel for promotion, hire, transfer and discharge, as appropriate.
• Maintain discipline onboard.
• Ensure that new employees reporting for duty have the necessary training and orientation.
• Hear informal crew grievances, inform the GM or his designee of the disposition, and make appropriate recommendations.
• Dismiss or place ashore any crewmember or guest whose conduct threatens the safety of his/her vessel, the environment, crew, or service to the customer.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid and active OUPV License.
• Valid Merchant Mariner Document and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
• Valid state driver’s license.
• Valid first aid certificate and valid CPR training.
• Ability to: Understand and use information in cargo information cards and material safety data sheets; demonstrate good judgment for effective problem solving; direct, fairly evaluate, and correct performance of subordinates; demonstrate excellent communication skills to effectively direct workers in assigning jobs and seeing them through to completion; and work independently and without direct supervision.
• Basic computer literacy, specifically with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, to maintain vessel documentation, complete web-based training, and keep up with vessel schedules via emails with agents.
• Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours, including willingness to take call outs and work nights, weekends, and holidays.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to:Sit or stand for extended periods of time; frequently reach with hands and arms; work safely and navigate in a marine setting; speak, hear and see (close vision and color vision); occasionally crouch or stoop; frequently lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs; hear and respond to verbal communication in noisy environments such as piers, docks, and warehouses with moving heavy equipment; and withstand exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, rain, cold and or/humidity.
