About the Opportunity.
Ahlstrom Nonwovens in Windsor Locks, CT is a high quality, successful producer of specialty paper products for the medical and food industries. As a member of our Engineering department, the Production Engineer is responsible for providing day-to-day process support to the paper machines, winders, support equipment and projects as assigned. He or she will participate in the design, development and installation of new equipment and technologies. They will actively interface with Operations, Maintenance, Purchasing, equipment vendors and support service vendors.

Essential Functions and Primary Responsibilities:

  • Employ machine vision systems; Cognex (Ametek), Dr. Schenk, ABB and Isra for inspection to detect defects, contaminants, functional flaws, and other irregularities in a wide variety of fiber based material.
  • Assemble data from the varies production processes, utilizing advanced SCADA (WinCC) system which is then disseminated to varies platforms for visualization and statistical analysis.
  • Primary point of contact and full responsibility for all critical system like Quality Control Systems (QCS; basis weight, moisture, polymer pick up) and Web Inspection Systems (WIS; defect detection cameras) for Windsor Locks which includes Ahlstrom and Suominen platforms.
  • Coordinate the work of the QCS and WIS vendors who provide 24/7/365 service support for Windsor Locks which includes Ahlstrom and Suominen platforms.
  • Support currently installed Manufacturing Process and security cameras and manage addition/upgrade of cameras.
  • Utilize commercial off-the-shelf software to display current production information.
  • Provide off shift coverage when needed to support the 24/7/365 Windsor Locks platforms.
  • Work pro-actively to prevent the production of defective product.
  • Responsible for providing technical support to resolve internal and external problems, establish calibration systems, and assist with equipment/systems design.
  • Outside travel required to develop projects in support of business objectives, visit vendor facilities, conduct trials, attend seminars, training, and other company sites.
  • Support “lean” initiatives, “value stream” programs, kaizen events.
  • Lead and/or work with multi-functional groups to achieve project and team objectives.
  • Provide leadership, instruction, checkout and startup as required to implement new installations. Train
  • others in safe and effective practices.
  • Plan and develop Capital Project requests, including the financial estimating and business justifications.
  • Work closely with Maintenance and Operations personnel to investigate equipment malfunctions and/or new installation design and development.

Minimum Occupational Requirements:

  • BS Degree in a major engineering discipline with a minimum of 3 years in a Project or Production Engineer position with consistently proven and demonstrated high quality performance.
  • Experience with QCS and online vision inspection camera systems
  • Must operate computer hardware and various software programs, including CAD
