POSITION DESCRIPTION

Groundskeeper/Maintenance Engineer

Overview:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Maintenance and Operations and performs Maintenance Engineer duties as appropriate. As Groundskeeper performs basic gardening work involving the installation and maintenance of landscaping, lawns, athletic fields, and garden areas, operates a variety of grounds equipment required to perform such duties. The employee will be evaluated by the Director of Maintenance and Operations. A self-assessment can be included.

I. Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Works with the Director of Maintenance and Operations to plan schedules for the routine maintenance of facilities and upkeep of the grounds, including planting, pruning, irrigation, weed and insect control
b. Cares for lawns, shrubs, athletic fields, and other areas of school grounds
c. Mows, waters, trims, edges, fertilizes lawns and turfed areas
d. Plants, irrigates, and cultivates trees, shrubs, hedges, and flowers
e. Prunes and trims trees, hedges, and shrubs
f. Prepares and treats soil for planting
g. Spades and fertilizes flowerbeds and sets out plants
h. Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, picks up papers and debris, and keeps grounds in a clean and orderly condition
i. Performs minor repairs to gardening equipment, keeping all supplies and tools in proper condition
j. Drives truck in performance of work
k. Operates lawn mowers, edgers, aerators, sweepers, and other motorized equipment l. Clean drains, culverts, and gutters to maintain effective rain and flood control
m. Keeps records of stock and equipment
n. Requisitions supplies
o. Assists with repair of fences and playground equipment
p. Assists with minor blacktop and cement work
q. Delivers and moves supplies, furniture, and equipment
r. Acts as substitute custodian
s. Maintains sprinkler systems and adjusts watering schedules according to conditions
t. Programming, maintenance, and adjustment of computerized systems, such as irrigation
u. Sweeps sidewalks and play areas and picks up debris campus-wide
v. Performs crossing guard duties as assigned
w. Has knowledge of applicable safety and health requirements, disposes of hazardous materials pursuant to District procedures
x. Acts as District’s Integrated Pest Management coordinator
y. Attends the District Field Use Committee meetings
z. Determines field condition and advises user groups of field status
aa. Ensures words, actions and duties support an inclusive environment for all students, adults and community members, where equity is paramount
bb. Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge of: Electical/HVAC Training and experience Preferred. Approved methods, of planting, cultivating, propagating, pruning, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers; gardening materials, tools, and equipment, including their proper use and care; plants adapted to the climate of the area; various types of soil in the area and the fertilizer to be used; safe working practices, including hazardous materials disposal.

Ability to: Recommend and carry out a centralized program of grounds maintenance; perform skilled gardening and grounds keeping work; interpret landscaping plans and sketches; order and keep records of supplies and equipment; operate light motorized equipment; understand and carry out oral and written directions; perform physical labor that includes heavy lifting, pulling, pushing, and working on ladders; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including students; read and write at the level required for successful job performance; work without direct supervision,

Classified maintain schedules, set priorities, and develop an organized daily work plan; maintain student and staff safety while working; use computerized technology to perform job duties. Must have a valid California Driver’s License.

II. Qualifications and Terms of Employment:
a. Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school
b. Training and experience, which will provide the necessary Maintenance skills and knowledge. Electrical/HVAC Training and experience preferred.
c. Possession of a valid California driver’s license
d. Possession of a home telephone or cellular telephone.

III. Working Conditions:

Environment: Indoor and outdoor instructional environments.

Physical Abilities: Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to perform assigned tasks; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate assigned equipment; bending at the waist; kneeling or crouching; ability to stand for long periods; ability to walk long distances; ability to climb ladders and operate machinery; physical ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds: physical ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance; is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

Hazards: Exposure to climatic elements and noise; potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases; frequent interruptions.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $30.55 - $34.54 per hour
