Job Summary/Basic Function
The Division of Advancement is accepting applications to fill twoMajor Gift Officer positions within the Development Office. The Millersville Development Office is a part of University Advancement Services. Our main objective is to support students by increasing University revenue from outside resources.

The Major Gift Officer’s responsibilities include facilitating and securing major gift support for priority projects and endowments, as well as securing general annual support from assigned portfolio of major gift prospects. Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Advancement, other responsibilities include identifying, cultivating, and soliciting high asset prospects for philanthropic support of the University; working with other development staff, University administrators, faculty, key volunteers, and other staff in securing major gifts; working within budget regarding annual expenditures on assigned projects.

Annual Salary: $69,716.00 – $80,000.00, plus comprehensive benefits starting on the first day of employment, including:
  • Health insurance – Low bi-weekly premium, with coverage starting on the first day of employment for employee and all dependents.
  • Dental insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents with coverage starting on the first day of employment.
  • Vision insurance – Coverage is free to employee and dependents with coverage starting on the first day of employment.
  • Group life insurance – Equal to annual salary (up to $50,000) at no cost to the employee.
  • Voluntary Group Life and Accident Insurance – Available for purchase at low rates for additional employee coverage as well as coverage for spouse and children.
  • Long Term Disability Insurance – Available for purchase at low rates with either a 90 or 180-day waiting period.
  • Retirement – 2 plans to choose from.
  • Tuition waiver – For employee, spouse, and dependents.
  • Personal leave – Up to 6 days per year.
  • Vacation leave– Up to 10.4 days accrued per year for first year, increases to 15.6 days per year after 1 year.
  • Sick leave – Up to 15.6 days accrued per year, including up to 5 days per year that can be taken to care for a family member.
  • Holiday leave – 12 days per calendar year.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience in development or fundraising or equivalent education and experience to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • organize resources.
    • manage relationships.
    • assess and utilize demographic and/or financial data.
    • design and prepare statistical and outcome reports.
    • establish priorities.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Successful interview.
  • Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of direct major gift fundraising experience in higher education.
  • Digital Communication Skills.
  • Knowledge of:
    • fundraising databases.
    • federal, state and/or community funding sources and mechanisms.


Job Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major and capital gift donors and sponsorship prospects from multiple constituencies with emphasis on university priorities and prospects in assigned geographic territory and academic school(s).
  • Develop and implement annual and long-term plans to cultivate and solicit major philanthropic support for University priority projects and for general support from assigned prospects.
    • The job includes face-to-face donor visits and contacts, out of the office, as well as filing call/touch reports and other gift related records.
  • Ensure appropriate stewardship of gifts.
    • Connect supporters with university faculty and students.
  • Manage assigned pool of major gift prospects.
  • Manage multiple internal and external development office priorities and timetables.
    • Develop sound plans with sufficiently flexible timetables to respond to changing circumstances and other prospect/project management.
  • Serve on campus and/or donor related committees.
    • Liaison with academic dean(s).
    • Assist with advancement initiatives and events.
    • Provide support to the MU Foundation Board and its committees/initiatives.
  • Qualify suspects as prospects.
    • Evaluate capacity and interest of prospects.
    • Contact past donors periodically to steward well to position for next ask.
  • Identify new prospects with capacity to make a major gift to the University.
  • Assist with advancement initiatives and events.
  • Serve as liaison between University and prospects.
  • Provide stewardship to assigned prospect pool.
  • Serve as liaison between Development and the assigned volunteer committees.
  • Coordinate Campaign Priority Committee as assigned.
  • Maintain current knowledge of fundraising policies, gift vehicles, giving trends and University policies and procedures.
  • Prepare reports evaluating fundraising activities.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions
