Summary
As the Managing Director, Solution Architect within the User Experience and Solution Architecture team in the Business and Technology Solutions (BTS) department, you'll lead a team of Solution Architects (SA) to establish IT architecture governance and methodology to deliver on technology and data initiatives effectively. You will manage a Solution Architecture function and work to build a high-performance team that can turn business requirements into functional requirements for Save the Children’s technology portfolio. You'll partner with the Head of UX and Solution Architecture to build and identify opportunities around an IT architecture practice that will define best practices, processes, and documentation aligned with our projects and product roadmaps. You'll lead a new, diverse Solution Architecture team with a balance of empathy and rational thinking to deliver concrete value to the organization and achieve results.
What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)
People Management and Team Leadership (40%)
- Train, develop, coach, lead, and supervise staff, clearly communicating organization, division and department priorities, and how their work contributes to our mission, ensuring that the working environment continually fosters diversity, inclusion, and belonging – supporting Save the Children values.
- Proactively manage team resources including people, money, and organization knowledge.
- Shape team roles and work assignments to leverage and enhance people’s capabilities.
- Lead SA team and individuals to work collaboratively to achieve results.
- Create individual and team goals aligned to division and organization strategy.
- Coach staff to achieve shared goals and demonstrate positive work behaviors.
- Get people excited about learning and help staff identify development objectives.
- Create a positive and safe working environment.
- Attract, retain, and develop a diverse team.
- Partner with the Head of UX and Solution Architecture to identify and influence opportunities to shape both teams' goals and strategic direction.
- Leads the SA team to enforce a process for better collaboration and documentation standards around solution ideation, solution design, and solution implementation.
- Build effective processes to break down business problems and apply advanced analytical thought and judgment to reach project goals.
- Collaborate with the BTS extended management team (BTS ESMT) to better understand ways of working, roles, and responsibilities within the division and continually share and gather feedback with your team.
- Ensure BTS ESMT managers understand how to identify, acquire, and allocate your team's time and talent.
- As needed, direct the resolution of highly complex or unusual business problems.
- Empower the team to become champions of solution architecture best practices and effectively communicate the SA value to stakeholders and colleagues.
- Maintain and grow a supportive and connected team by looking for opportunities to learn together and individually.
Thought Leadership and Functional Excellence (60%)
- Establish our IT Architecture practice and the adoption of an architecture and standards methodology, documentation, and governance.
- Create and enforce vital documentation and communication for the SA team to help streamline and influence workflow.
- Deliver clear Solution Architecture artifacts and inclusion in project workflows.
- Align with the UX Manager to better define workflow, strategy, performance, and results for the two (UX and SA) teams, specifically through project work and department communications.
- Partner with the Dev Ops Manager to support SA and Dev Ops team deliverables and continually transform how technical requirements are captured, designed, built, and tested throughout projects.
- Partner with the Business Analysts Team Lead to coordinate testing procedures and processes for the Solution Architects, DevOps, and Business Analysts to follow to keep our tech solutions working as expected for our supporters and administrators.
- Work with the Solution Architecture Manager and other data, security, support, and operations leads to better define workflow, strategy, performance, and results through project work and communications.
- Begin transitioning the SA team to an agile mindset and way of working.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, plus at least 10 years of relevant experience
- Proven understanding of architecture domains, processes, and deliverables inherent to IT Architecture methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate the complexities of technical systems, process, and programs to stakeholders across all levels of the business.
- Experience successfully managing and delivering multiple projects and engagements.
- Has demonstrated the ability to anticipate and work through internal and external organizational change.
- Up to date on current industry trends, nonprofit technology, productivity tools, and advancements to keep in-depth knowledge and experience around Architecture and Project Methodologies to help improve BTS processes and productivity.
- Professional proficiency in MS Office suite and Atlassian IT project management tools.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels, both internally and externally.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering and maintaining an environment of diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the nonprofit space.
- Prior people management experience.
Compensation
Save the Children is offering the following salary ranges for this position, dependent on candidate's location:
- Geo 1 - NY Metro, DC, and other locations with labor costs significantly above the national average: Target Salary for this position is $131,750 – $147,250 base salary
- Geo 2 - Locations around the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $119,850 – $133,950 base salary
- Geo 3 - Locations significantly below the US National Labor Cost Average: Target Salary for this position is $107,950 – $120,650 base salary
Actual base salary may vary based upon, but not limited to, relevant experience, base salary of internal peers, business sector, and geographic location. Employee may be eligible for an incentive program. Save the Children also offers paid vacation, accrued at least 12 days a year, depending on paygrade and length of service, paid safety and wellness leave of at least 1 day per month worked for a full time employee which is pro rata reduced for employees working less than a full time schedule, and at least 10 paid holidays a year. Employees may be eligible for additional bonus compensation.
