About the Department
The Books Division of the University of Chicago Press has been publishing books for scholars, students, and general readers since 1892. Its mission is to disseminate scholarship of the highest standard, promote education, foster public understanding, and enrich cultural life. The Press’s acquisitions editors acquire and develop books that fulfill this mission, working closely with authors, agents, and institutions.
Job Summary
The Marketing Manager plans and implements promotional and publicity campaigns for an average of 100 books per publishing season, including high-profile trade books from Chicago and client publishers. The Marketing Manager also has one direct report from the promotions team.
Responsibilities
-
Serving as the initial managerial point of contact for the PM, providing mentoring, guidance, and assisting with daily problem-solving.

Approving absences and the Work Day time and Gems expenses of the PM.
-
Editing and approving client press marketing copy assigned to the PM.
-
Providing suggestions on and final approval of client press galley and review lists and related publicity materials, such as press releases, prepared by the PM.

Checking in regularly with the PM on the status of their projects, both Chicago and client press, and reporting any issues to the Promotions Director.

Providing feedback to the Promotions Director that will inform the PM’s annual performance review.

Reporting any performance issues or general concerns to the Promotions Director when they arise.

Serving on the senior management advisory team, providing suggestions and strategic feedback to the Promotions Director.

Writes catalog copy, press releases, and jacket or cover copy and seeks blurbs and endorsements for books.

Reviews advertisements, copy, and catalog pages; researches media and creates review lists; serves as marketing liaison with authors or client publishers and with other departments at the Press.

Coordinates with other members of the marketing department on issues related to the books that they are working on.

Works with other members of the promotions team to help conceive, manage, and carry out larger departmental initiatives.

Works with authors and client publishers on developing and executing marketing plans for their books.

May assist managing relationships with external sales agencies.

May participate in developing new products and services, and determining new markets. Acts as a resource for and trains lower-level marketing staff. May attend trade shows as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

At least eight years of related experience, preferably in books marketing.
