Martin County Highway Mechanic

Mechanic for the Martin County Highway Department, responsible for maintenance and repair of Department vehicles and equipment.

Duties:

Performs adjustments, preventative maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline trucks and equipment.

Operates equipment and vehicles to diagnose malfunctions, including observing, listening and identifying problem source such as; realigning wheels, changing or recharging batteries and maintaining equipment’s electrical systems.

Performs various mechanical trades in repairing and fabricating parts, including welding, brazing, lubricating moving parts and torch cutting.

Fabricates and installs added features on new vehicles and equipment, such new muffler systems on equipment, special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems and shields.

Performs examinations on protective guards, loose bolts and specified safety devices on trucks and make adjustments.

Complete work orders according to blueprints and/or schematic drawings and gives estimates of time required for repair completion.

Operates and/or drives repaired trucks or equipment to verify conformance to specifications.

Operates overhaul of gas or diesel engines, pumps, pump power units, generators, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends.

Assist in maintaining inventory of parts, materials, fuels, and tools and ordering parts.

Maintain detailed records of parts, materials, fuels, tools and ordering parts.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Skills and Knowledge:

High School Diploma or GED and Automotive Technician Degree.

Must be 18 years of age.

Ability to meet all Martin County hiring requirements, including passage of medical exam, drug test and Heavy Equipment & Vehicle Repair Training.

Knowledge of D.O.T requirements and standards.

Working knowledge of service manuals and office equipment.

Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, specifications, instruments, gauges and dials.

Ability to analyze, evaluate, observe, diagnose, investigate, coordinate, place, make determinations and act based on data analysis.

Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace and personal conduct.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $20.50 per hour
