About the Department
The Vector-borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (VBDDL) is within the Department of Clinical Sciences (DOCS), administered by the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University.

The focus of the VBDDL at NCSU-CVM is vector-borne disease research and diagnostics. We strive to identify, characterize, and advance our understanding of vector-borne pathogens for purposes of benefiting animal health and translational research. It is our intention to provide quality answers to diagnostic questions. The assays, antigens and controls used are developed and validated as a component of our research. We reserve the right to modify methods or reagents as needed to achieve the best analysis possible without reliance on any proprietary methods or reagents.

Essential Job Duties
The primary role of this position will be to serve as medical laboratory technician within the VBDDL molecular diagnostics team.

Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Completing routine diagnostic PCR testing for detection of vector borne diseases and DNA sequence alignment analysis
  • Evaluation and processing of clinical samples for diagnostic testing
  • Entering test orders and results into laboratory information system
  • Organization and storage of diagnostic specimens
  • Preparation of reagents and PCR components
  • Routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment
  • Training of and delegation of tasks to student workers
  • Completion of diagnostic and research testing tasks as assigned by Molecular Team Leader


Under the supervision of Molecular Team Leader this person will be expected to assist with Idexx SNAP4DX Plus (antigen/antibody test kits), quantitative PCR, Next Generation Sequencing, probe-based real-time PCR, multiplex qPCRs, and droplet digital PCR. The person in this role will have the potential to contribute to original research, with co-authorship on manuscripts.

Other Responsibilities
Other responsibilities will include:
  • Working closely with administrative staff and submitting veterinarians in ensuring that clinical samples and test submissions are submitted correctly for testing.
  • Assisting molecular team leader in validation and testing of new diagnostic testing assays.
  • Other duties as assigned by molecular team leader or laboratory manager.

Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.



Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Exceptional communication skills and professional behavior including ability to communicate with others in laboratory and veterinary setting
  • Must have ability to follow bio-safety rules.

Preferred Qualifications
  • BS degree in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry or other life science-related field.
  • Experience with the following computer and software: Google Drives, Microsoft Office; Microsoft Excel; Orchard/UVIS, or other laboratory information systems.
  • Experience with the following laboratory techniques and equipment: DNA extraction, PCR, probe-based PCR, multiplex PCR, sequence analysis; automated instruments (QIASymphony, KingFisher and Tecan liquid handling).
  • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing and/or nucleotide sequence analysis software.
  • Experience interacting with veterinarians and scientists utilizing diagnostic services.
