About The Position

The Mental Health Researcher will conduct requirements-driven basic and applied research to promote the psychological resilience, neurological functioning, and operational readiness of service members. Participates in research and development activities to investigate the extent to which differences in chronic and/or acute sleep debt account for individual differences in TBI-related neurocognitive/vestibular/physiological/psychomotor deficits and help establish the potential utility of the objective assessment of sleep (with actigraphy and/or polysomnography) in a patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health research support currently conducted in the Military Psychiatry Branch at the US Army Research Institute for the Behavioral & Social Sciences, Ft. Hood Research Unit, TX
  • Develop and evaluate mental health interventions designed to increase Service Member resiliency and performance (e.g., Battlemind)
  • Collect data, develop/maintain databases, analyze and interpret a broad array of mental health indicators to include survey data, objective performance data, neurophysiologic performance data, sleep data and injury-related data for the purpose of developing policies and procedures to enhance and maintain resilience, performance, and mental health
  • Support the transition of research-based products to the broader Army or DoD communities
  • Perform scientific design and execution of evaluation studies
  • Act as a primary investigator on a research study
  • Manage every aspect of the scientific process from writing protocols to the final steps of report generation and manuscript publication
  • Perform a variety of training development and program evaluation functions in support of the Mental Health Research (MHR) program. The training development data and tools, and program evaluation functions shall be in support of behavioral health training tools to aid providers, medics, leaders, and Soldiers
  • Assist in the development of training modules including conducting literature reviews, acquiring media materials, preparing PowerPoint modules, and writing lesson plans
  • Develop evaluation tools as well as on-site evaluation of trainers
  • Write protocols to the final steps of report generation and manuscript publication
  • Assist with the design of research studies and provide scientific input into the research process
  • Be responsible for the execution of research studies and for all aspects of data collection, thus providing support in data management and data analyses
  • Design surveys, coordinate data collections, collect survey and interview data, process data, archive data by entering all data into appropriate databases, and prepare codebooks
  • Assist in preparing command briefings, technical reports, and manuscripts for publication in professional journals
  • Promote safety and confidentiality of research participants at all times when working with human research studies
  • Promote humane and ethical treatment of animal subjects when working with animal research studies
  • Adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Clinical Practices (GCP)
  • Maintain a collaborative research environment with all site personnel, research participants, The Geneva Foundation, and the prime partner organization

Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in Psychology or other Behavioral Health fields required
  • 5 years experience in the field
  • Minimum of 5 years working in a military setting
  • 5 years medical research project management experience strongly desired, preferably with Department of Defense
  • Demonstrate expertise in a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
  • Performs a variety of tasks
  • May provide consultation on complex projects and is considered to be the top level contributor/specialist
  • Wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
  • Experience with advanced medical technologies preferred
  • Demonstrate competence in oral and written communication
  • Must be organized, attentive to detail, and possess a positive, friendly, and professional demeanor
  • Ability to be flexible with changing priorities and available to interact with employees, clients, and sponsors at all levels
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in fast-paced, high-pressured environment with strict deadlines and to manage multiple projects
  • Ability to develop strong trusting relationships to gain support and achieve results
  • Computer skills, including at least intermediate experience with Excel and other Microsoft Office software

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $66,000.00 - $88,000.00 per year
