About the Indiana War Memorials Commission (IWM):

The Indiana War Memorials Commission manages the Indiana War Memorial Historic District in downtown Indianapolis, including the Indiana War Memorial, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, American Legion Mall, Veterans Memorial Plaza, and University Park, as well as the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) Memorial, the Medal of Honor Memorial, and the 9/11 Memorial on the Canal. The Indiana War Memorial contains the IWM Museum.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the IWMC is to honor and commemorate the service, valor, and sacrifice of America’s armed forces and veterans, especially those from Indiana, and to educate the public about the military history of our nation and state.

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900 but may be commensurate with education and/or prior work experience.

Role Overview:

As a Museum Specialist, you will perform the following primary duties: assist with the design, development, installation, and maintenance of museum exhibits, and management of the museum’s collection of historic military artifacts and battle flags. You will also assist with guided tours, staffing the front desk, and interacting with veterans and the public about the IWM Museum and Historic District.

A Day in the Life:

The essential elements of the job duties:

  • Assist with design, development, and production of museum exhibits and display cases, following professional standards and museum objectives.
  • Review and research design and production of museum display materials to ensure that the selection of materials, and manner of construction and display are correct.
  • Research and write accurate educational copy for exhibit display panels and artifact object labels about assigned exhibit subjects, such as conflicts, battles, units, vehicles, weapons, individual veterans, and other military history subjects.
  • Manage the museum’s collection of historic military artifacts and battle flags, including cataloging, storing, handling, and researching objects, and administering the collections database.
  • Work with donors and lenders to obtain artifacts for the collection, and conduct inventories.
  • Assist with related projects such as conservation of historic battle flags and other items.
  • Perform museum public relations and visitor experience services by scheduling and guiding tours of the museum, and interacting with veterans, the public, educators, students, living historians, and tour groups to answer questions about the museum.
  • Produce educational and promotional content such as videos, presentations, and self-guided tours.
  • Perform additional duties such as representing the museum at special events, supporting use of agency information technology and audiovisual resources, staffing the front desk during operating hours, and closing the museum and building at night.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in History, Museum Studies, or related field preferred.
  • Ability to use a variety of software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Working knowledge of American and Indiana military history.
  • Working knowledge of professional museum guidelines and division objectives.
  • Effective communications skills.
  • Experience with researching and writing about historical subjects.
  • Ability to research assigned subjects such as identification and history of an artifact, specific conflict, or method of construction using a variety of sources.
  • Ability to work independently on various assignments.
  • Ability or experience with design, carpentry, photography, painting, and audiovisual components are a plus.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
