General Information
The information below sets out the key responsibilities that are to be undertaken by the "Roots and Soul Head of Safety and Security."
The successful candidate should have a range of skills and experience in the areas of security, safety, events, policing, emergency planning, crowd management, de-escalation techniques, customer service, and administration.
The successful candidate must be able to show evidence of their involvement in the planning and delivery of events, as well as the certified qualifications described below.
The role involves working outside normal office hours and may require changes to working hours at short notice.
This is a Seasonal position.
Corporate - General
- Responsible for implementing and delivering on the Corporate Safety Policy and other best practices for the adequate safety of staff, players, and fans of the Oakland Roots and Soul.
- Review Crisis Management Process for both Match & Event use, making recommendations for the Security Management Team, including any training that may be required.
Corporate Specific
- Responsible for creating, updating, and managing a Safety & Security Operational Plan for all Oakland Roots and Soul game days and events, which reflects the company's Purpose and Mission.
- Lead in the planning and delivery of Safety & Security programs for events.
- We are developing and implementing contingency and emergency plans for events at the stadium.
- Develop evacuation plans for Normal & Emergency situations (including Evacuation, Shelter in Place, and Active Shooter)
- Develop and implement match-day safety & security briefings for all security staff.
- Develop and make available match-day safety & security briefings for all nonsecurity staff.
- Develop and implement a recording and reporting process to ensure that issues are accurately and adequately dealt with.
Training
- Develop Safety & Security training for security staff
- Develop Safety & Security (awareness) training for full-time nonsecurity staff
- Develop Safety & Security (awareness) training for event-day nonsecurity staff
- Work with emergency services, deliver specialist training and awareness for Roots and Soul staff (Active Shooter, Counter Terrorism, Shelter in Place)
- Provide regular staff updates relating to safety and security
- Provide guidance and assistance to staff (when requested) regarding any areas of concern they may be having
Liaison
- Point of Contact for all Safety & Security matters for the organization
- Primary liaison with emergency services regarding staffing, deployments, and costs
- Oversee arrangements with the local government, permitting & road closures
- Direct liaison with State and Federal agencies (where appropriate) regarding risks assessments
- Liaison with USL on matters of Safety & Security and associated Risks & Risk Assessments
Administration
- In collaboration with HR, manage staffing, reviews & appraisals (where required) of any staff designated as part of the security team.
- Manage the administration of the Safety and Security Department (budgeting, forecast, staffing, training, equipment, and materials, as directed by the President & Chief of Staff)
- Manage external relationships (emergency services & local government) regarding Safety & Security, including oversight of staffing, & billing.
- Manage the selection process and hiring of private security & external security services (not emergency services)
- In collaboration with other departments, ensure that the delivery of "Excellence in Customer Service" applies to all those responsible for the event's delivery and respects the organization's Purpose process.
Pre-Event - No later than Match Day -1
- Complete venue inspection
- Ensure the build-out has been completed according to the policy
- Prepare radios and other security equipment required to deliver the event safely
- Prepare match-day risk assessment
- Prepare match-day briefings for all security and nonsecurity staff
- Prepare and operate a Unified Command for the coordination and response of all security staff
Event Day – Before opening the gates
- Complete venue inspection
- Ensure all briefings have been given
- Ensure all staff and emergency services have been deployed
- Check with the Chief of Staff that the venue and all departments are ready to receive guests
- A complete inspection of screening magnetometers is prepared for use.
- Ensure entry to the venue is prepared with cueing of fans
During Event
- Responsible for ensuring that all events comply with the agreed policy, process, and best practices
- Responsible for managing the event security team, and emergency services, to ensure a safe, efficient, and successful event.
- Monitor the progress of the event throughout
- Make any necessary adjustments to the plan that may be required
- Ensure the three (3) event phases are adequately managed with effective and seamless transition
- Ingress

Post Event
- Ensure that any/all incidents/issues are appropriately reported/recorded through the Command Post
- Ensure all supervisor feedback has been correctly reported/recorded
- Ensure the Security Management Team is informed of any incidents/issues of interest before closing the event down (Match Day - Crisis Management Team)
- Within 48 hours, complete a full Match Day report – Earlier in the case of more severe incidents
Requirements:
- Certificate of Completion from one of the following:
- Security Certification of Basic, Intermediate, Supervisory, and Specialized
- Experience with live events and experience in sports is a plus
- Be available for a minimum of 17 Home Games
- Physically able to move around the venue for long periods of time
- Bi-Lingual is a plus (English and Spanish)
- Seasonal Salary range is $50 - $75 per hour based on experience
