Observatory Educator is responsible for leading and assisting with astronomy programs at observatory park at turner farm. Educators work with many audiences including scouts and the general public.

Position is under the general direction of the Manager of Education and Outreach and the site operations branch. Educators work with and support volunteer experts in program research, planning, development, and implementation.

JobDescription:

· Develop, implement and evaluate interpretive and educational, astronomy and science programming for the public and community groups. Work independently and on a team depending on the project or programming offerings. Target programming audiences are scouts, camps, schools, introductory and intermediate learners.

· Quarterly and by request coordinate scheduling of single, weekly, & monthly program/event schedules, and outreach opportunities, with FCPA staff, and other volunteer community support groups.

· Assist in the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers to support programming at Turner Farm Park, within the Fairfax County Volunteer Management System.

· Follows FCPA safety reporting, guidelines and SOPs for the operations of facilities and equipment. Indoor and outdoor facility opening/closing procedures will be followed, which may include janitorial tasks.

· Uses computer software for programming functions, shared calendars, email and Microsoft Office for organization and communications internally and externally.

· Work with International Dark Sky Association to achieve and maintain the Urban Dark Sky Designation. This will include educating the public about light pollution and its remedies.

Location: Work will generally occur at Observatory Park at Turner Farm 925 Springvale Road

Great Falls, Virginia 22066. Occasionally attend outreach events and staff a booth at events throughout the community as a representative of FCPA and interact with the public to inform them of FCPA resources and programs.

Qualifications:18+ Applicants should have some course work in astronomy, education, interpretation, or science. These would be beneficial but are not required. Applicants should have the ability to work with all age groups.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Be able to walk long distances over various types of terrain and stand for long periods of time. Previous work with children is a plus. 1st Aid, CPR & AED certifications are required to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Salary: Starting at $12- $16 hr. based on experience, no benefits. This position cannot exceed 980 hours per calendar year.

Hours: Most hours are at night between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with various weekends and daytimes for astronomical events.
