Job Summary

This seasonal, intermittent position is located at Buffalo River State Park, near Glyndon, Minnesota. Anticipated season dates are early-May through late- September each year. This position will generally work an on-call schedule of approximately one to two shifts per week. This position will primarily be scheduled for night security shifts, but may also be scheduled for day shifts. Typical shifts will be scheduled between 12:00 pm and 1:00 AM. Schedule will include most weekends, evenings and holidays.
This position will perform Night Watch duties during periods deemed appropriate and as assigned by park supervisors. This position is also responsible for performing tasks necessary to maintain buildings, grounds, facilities, and resources for the protection of park resources and the enjoyment of park visitors to Buffalo River State Park.
Responsibilities include:
  • To provide protection and security to park visitors and protect park resources by enforcing park rules, regulations and policy as allowed by Division policy.
  • Perform building maintenance so that the buildings are safe, clean, and attractive for park visitors. These buildings include the contact station, visitor center, rental facilities, shop buildings, toilet and shower buildings, fish cleaning house, and vault toilets.
  • Perform grounds maintenance so park visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience. Ensure that natural resources are protected and preserved in a safe and sanitary condition at all times.
  • Assist in the operation of Buffalo River's principal revenue producing facility so that visitors will be able to utilize park according to policies set forth by the Department of Natural Resources.
  • Perform resource management tasks so that the park's natural communities and cultural resources are protected, restored or rehabilitated consistent with statewide and regional objectives.
  • Perform routine maintenance and do minor repairs on park equipment. Clean and maintain shop facilities to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Act as a public information distribution point to park visitors and others so that the visitor is informed and is knowledgeable of the park area.
  • Assure responsibility for safety and accountability for safety performance so that employee will perform tasks according to established safety procedures and reduce injuries and equipment damage.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability and willingness to work alone at night, including in remote areas.
  • Ability to operate a phone, two-way radio, computer, cash register, and other office equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to provide written information and instructions to the public and other employees.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle, tractor, heavy equipment, snowmobile, snow blower, ATV, chain saw, tree planter, stump remover, lawn mower, small hand tools and other equipment and tools sufficient to perform assigned duties correctly and safely.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions on labels, in instruction manuals, and procedures, etc. sufficient to use materials/chemicals correctly and safely.
  • Record keeping skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Security training and experience.
  • Experience performing routine maintenance and repair of small engines, vehicles, and other equipment and tools.
  • Arithmetic skills sufficient to accurately collect money from the public for various fees.
  • Knowledge of (State) park rules, policies and facilities.
  • Computer skills.
  • Experience in the construction trades.
  • First Aid and CPR training.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pounds and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

*This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record*
