Opportunity Summary

Under limited supervision, the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Technician will assist with operation and maintenance of power plant equipment and systems in a safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally correct manner while assigned on shift. Operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and assists in the repair of mechanical equipment, electrical equipment, and instrumentation. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, the gas and steam turbines, generators, air compressors, water treatment equipment, transformers, motors, pumps, diesel generators and other auxiliary equipment. The O&M Technician will produce optimal performance in full compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Primary Duties

• Competently supports the safe and reliable start-up, operation, shutdown, and maintenance of the cogeneration facility equipment and systems with minimal guidance or assistance
• Uses facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to operate, maintain, and repair facility equipment and ensure equipment is operated within acceptable parameters
• Maintains equipment by making adjustments, tightening fittings, replacing valve packing, gaskets, valves, gauges, etc. and cleaning, replacing, oiling and lubricating other component parts and equipment as required. Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and mechanical isolation.
• Performs water chemistry/analyses and ensures water chemistry is within proper control ranges. Make adjustments to water chemistry, as needed, by controlling chemical feed and/or blow down rates. Works with water treatment vendor to properly monitor overall chemistry program.
• Communicates plant issues and keeps team and management fully informed of plant operations, unusual conditions, and faulty equipment. Provides detailed status of plant conditions to fellow team members and Teams at shift turnover.
• Carries out switching programs in the switchyard; opens and closes circuit breakers as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation
• Takes and understands readings on Operator Log Sheets for all running equipment, including reading meters, gauges, or automatic devices to record data such as temperature of equipment, vibration of equipment, hours of operation, pressure, and fluid levels to verify operating conditions. Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
• Uses a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to support the facility maintenance philosophy by thoroughly recording equipment problems on work requests and documenting maintenance actions taken on work order forms. Handles corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance work orders in a timely and high quality manner.
• Performs operational maintenance tasks as assigned
• Responsible for supporting and following proper safety programs/procedures during operations and maintenance activities to include Safe Work Permits, LOTO, Hot Work, and Confined Space
• Issues equipment clearances and work permits to ensure safe working conditions for plant employees and contractors
• Reads, understands and complies with all regulatory procedures and facility safety programs in accordance with federal, state, local, and company policies, permits, requirements, and plant manuals
• Follows all plant environmental permits
• Performs general housekeeping and continuous improvement of the appearance of the facility including painting projects as required. Maintains the cleanliness of all areas of the plant and Control Room.
• Performs other duties as required

Working Relationship

The Operations Technician reports to the Operations Supervisor.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection and others must be worn in the performance of some duties. Work with hazardous materials may be required.

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Work Schedule

This position requires working 7 days on twelve hour rotating shifts with 7 days off, and the possibility of overtime, weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.

Compensation

Starting compensation will range from $31.95 to $56.28 per hour.

Job Qualifications

• Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school is required. An Associate Degree in a technical field is desirable.
• Extensive working knowledge of power plant industry desirable
• Demonstrates knowledge of power plant systems and fundamentals, including equipment, system interrelationship, and functional tasks
• Ability to maintain control under adverse conditions including startups, shutdowns, and unit/system events.
• In-depth knowledge of safety and environmental regulations
• Strong PC Skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
• Must have strong listening skills and solid communications skills (verbal and written) with the ability to communicate work instructions to co-workers and write routine reports and correspondence
