Operations Manager

The Sumner Municipal Light Plant is seeking applicants for the position of Operations Manager due to a retirement.

Sumner Iowa is a progressive community of 2100 people, located in Northeast, Iowa. Sumner residents are proud of our school system, newer community owned hospital, vibrant library and aquatics center. We are at the gateway to the numerous recreational and leisure opportunities that Northeast Iowa has to offer.

The Operations Manager reports to the SMLP 5-member Board of Directors, and works in tandem with the Financial Manager in the daily operations of the SMLP and with the Board in achieving the longer-term goals of the Utility. The SMLP has memberships in NIMECA (North Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association), and the IAMU (Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities. SMLP has 5475 KW of diesel-powered generation onsite, utilized for both “islanding” in emergencies and paralleling for production back into our transmission ties. We also have a 35 KW community solar garden.

The SMLP utilizes the training/continuing education opportunities of the IAMU. Our plant was commissioned 2 years ago and we are in a long-range plan to underground our system.

The successful candidate will meet the following requirements: High School Diploma and Journeyman/Lineman Certification. Experience in Maintenance and Construction of both Overhead & Underground Distribution at the 12.5- and 4.16-KW voltages

Generator Operations & Maintenance Experience are a plus. Serve On-call duty on a rotational basis, required to be available for occasional overtime work due to after-hour emergencies, and possess a valid Iowa driver’s license with a minimum Class B CDL with air brake endorsement.

Must comply with SMLP’s residency requirements within 6 months of employment.

Build & maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public

This is a “working manager’s” position with a generous benefit package including IPERS retirement and Health Insurance Benefits. Salary dependent on Qualifications. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check and drug and alcohol screening.
