POSITION TITLE: Paraprofessional - Hourly TAP (Teacher Academic Program)


QUALIFICATIONS


The Teacher Academy Project (T.A.P.) is a secondary education certificate project designed for individuals who have earned an undergraduate degree and want to be a teacher. The program is designed to increase the number of teacher candidates with teacher certification in high demand areas. Candidates for TAP must hold an undergraduate degree in a major related to secondary (grades 7-12) endorsement area.

The graduate work completed during this program may be applied toward completion of a Masters degree in secondary education. Project participants will be enrolled as full time students. This accelerated program is offered once each year and will allow for completion of the certification requirements within one calendar year.

  • BS or BA with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.70 with major in an area of secondary endorsement
  • Completion of T.A.P. application packet
  • Para Professional Skills Test
  • Interview and Selection by a MOEC school district
  • Be available for intensive full time enrollment and internship experience
  • Admit to Graduate College. The masters degree program in secondary education requires a 3.0 GPA
  • Experience working with children
  • Ability to work independently

RESPONSIBILITIES


The T.A.P. offers:

  • A practical education experience in a MOEC school working with students, faculty and administrators in an internship role
  • Immersion in the culture of a secondary school with an opportunity to observe the modeling of effective teaching techniques and strategies followed by opportunities for immediate application
  • Priority consideration for employment upon successful completion of the program

Education

  • Academic coursework is completed in an area of secondary endorsement
  • Graduate studies for each TAP cohort group. Graduate studies focus on the coursework required for teacher certification. Fifteen to eighteen hours of study can be applied to a Master’s degree in secondary education.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ability to work under a Teacher's/Specialist's direction to assist with academic learning
  • Must have knowledge of computers and ability to assist students with computers
  • Should possess good math skills as well as proficiency in reading

Goals

  • To provide a quality alternative certification option that leads to secondary teacher certification by providing instruction and experiences on various teaching techniques, academic competencies and instructional strategies
  • To provide TAP candidates with professional development opportunities while completing the certification requirements under the direct mentorship of the TAP support team
  • To provide support for individual TAP candidates with mentoring by a master teacher, building level administrator and university faculty
